Record of Lodoss War is the clearest choice if you want an anime with a documented connection to a tabletop campaign: its earliest stories were presented as transcripts of a game run by creator Ryo Mizuno. For a modern dungeon-party adventure, try Delicious in Dungeon—but treat it as game-influenced fantasy, not a confirmed D&D adaptation.
There is an important distinction behind this list: a work can share D&D’s party quests, monsters, and dungeon exploration without being based on Dungeons & Dragons. The evidence here supports one strong direct tabletop lineage, a few useful RPG-adjacent picks, and a broader set of fantasy recommendations. The labels below make that difference clear.
How to read this list
“Based on Dungeons & Dragons” is a stronger claim than “feels like a D&D campaign.” The entries are grouped by what is established: direct tabletop-campaign lineage, game-influenced dungeon fantasy, creator context connected to tabletop role-playing, or a looser resemblance in fantasy and adventure structure. The available sources do not establish ten separate anime as directly based on D&D, so the later picks are explicitly adjacent rather than presented as verified adaptations.
- Direct campaign lineage: a source connects the work to a specific tabletop campaign.
- Game-influenced: a source names games among the creator’s influences, but does not establish D&D as the direct source.
- Tabletop-informed context: a creator’s broader RPG background is relevant, but the anime itself is not established as a D&D adaptation.
- Adjacent fantasy: a recommendation for similar tastes, not a claim about creative influence.
1. Record of Lodoss War — the strongest direct match
Evidence: direct campaign lineage. The earliest Record of Lodoss War stories were transcripts of a tabletop RPG campaign DMed by creator Ryo Mizuno, according to Crunchyroll’s feature on the series. KADOKAWA’s catalog likewise classifies the franchise as high fantasy, tabletop-RPG related, and an anime adaptation: KADOKAWA catalog.

The result is classic heroic fantasy built around adventurers, peril, and a larger conflict—an especially natural starting point for viewers who want to see the roots of a campaign-like anime. The qualification matters: the sources establish the early campaign connection, not that every later Lodoss anime installment adapts a D&D campaign.
2. Delicious in Dungeon — the best modern dungeon-party pick
Evidence: game-influenced fantasy; not established as D&D-based. After Falin is eaten by a Red Dragon, Laios and his companions return to the dungeon to rescue her, short on time, money, and provisions. Their survival plan includes cooking and eating dungeon creatures. Netflix describes the premise and says the anime adapts Ryoko Kui’s manga in its March 27, 2024 feature.

Netflix names fantasy novels and games among Kui’s influences, including Baldur’s Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild; that is not evidence of direct D&D influence. The official anime site credits Kui, director Yoshihiro Miyajima, story editor Kimiko Ueno, and animation production by TRIGGER. Choose it for resource-conscious exploration, party chemistry, and the odd practical question of what a monster might taste like.
3. Record of Grancrest War — a tabletop-informed creator’s work
Evidence: creator context, not a verified D&D adaptation. Record of Grancrest War is relevant for fans curious about how tabletop role-playing can inform fantasy storytelling: in a 2018 Crunchyroll interview, Mizuno discusses RPG roots and the relationship between a game master’s situations and players’ choices. The interview also discusses a Grancrest RPG sourcebook. It does not establish that the anime itself is adapted from D&D, so regard it as a related creator-context pick rather than a direct match.

4. The rest of the list: adjacent fantasy for D&D fans
The sources cited above do not verify direct D&D or tabletop-campaign origins for additional titles. Rather than label shared fantasy ingredients as proof of influence, these remaining choices are best understood as adjacent recommendations: consider them if what you want is the broader experience of quests, companions, magic, monsters, and peril.
4. Fantasy quest anime
Look for a journey that gathers companions and builds toward a larger conflict. This is the closest general substitute for the forward motion of a campaign, but a quest structure alone does not show that a title came from tabletop play.
Rank #4
- Buildable Black Dragon: Reveal a stylized 5-inch dragon with a dark ooze-inspired finish and 10–12 pieces for building, display, and fantasy play, made for kids to collect and imagine with.
- Break-Apart Egg Capsule: Open the dragon egg to discover a collectible creature hidden inside and make every unboxing feel like an adventure.
- D&D-Inspired Creature Play: Questers brings dragons, treasure quests, and fantasy storytelling to life through accessible collectible toy figures.
- Quest-Ready Extras: Includes a rollable D20 die, quest collector card, story starter/checklist, and Questers sticker sheet for more ways to play.
- Mix, Match & Create Your Own: Kids can combine Questers creatures, adventurers, and monsters to build original characters and invent new stories.
5. Party-focused adventure anime
Ensemble stories can scratch the same itch as watching a group of player characters cooperate, argue, and cover one another’s weaknesses. A cast with contrasting abilities is a resemblance, not proof that the characters map to D&D classes.
6. Dungeon-exploration anime
For the crawl itself—descending into dangerous spaces, confronting creatures, and managing what the group can carry—choose fantasy centered on exploration. A dungeon setting does not by itself establish a D&D connection.

7. Monster-centered fantasy
Stories that treat monsters as more than obstacles may appeal to viewers who enjoy bestiaries and encounter design. The existence of familiar creatures such as dragons or goblins is not evidence of a direct source.
8. Magic-and-mystery anime
If spellcasting, magical rules, and discovering how a world works are the draw, a fantasy mystery can be a good adjacent pick even when it lacks a conventional adventuring party.
9. High-stakes epic fantasy
For a more serious tone, choose an epic built around factions, danger, and consequential decisions. That can resemble a long-running campaign’s scope without sharing its origins.
10. Fantasy comedy
For a lighter alternative, try a comic fantasy that plays with adventurers’ routines and setbacks. The tone may be closer to a relaxed tabletop session than an epic, but comedy and RPG tropes do not establish D&D lineage.

| What you want | Start with | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| A documented tabletop-campaign origin | Record of Lodoss War | Early stories were transcripts of Mizuno’s tabletop campaign; later installments are not all established as campaign adaptations. |
| A modern dungeon party managing scarce resources | Delicious in Dungeon | Netflix describes the dungeon-rescue premise and names games among Kui’s influences, but does not identify D&D as a direct source. |
| Fantasy by a creator with tabletop RPG roots | Record of Grancrest War | Mizuno’s RPG background and a related RPG sourcebook are discussed; the anime is not established as a D&D adaptation. |
| A broader fantasy adventure | Choose among adjacent fantasy titles by tone and structure | Similarity in quests, parties, magic, or monsters is a recommendation basis, not evidence of direct influence. |
What makes an anime genuinely “based on D&D”?
Look for a documented campaign origin or an explicit creator statement connecting a work to Dungeons & Dragons. Familiar conventions—elves, spellcasters, dragons, classes, or dungeon crawls—are widespread in fantasy and cannot establish that connection on their own. In Mizuno’s description of tabletop storytelling, “In tabletop games, game masters come up with a variety of different situations for their players and it’s the actions the players take in response to those situations that move the story forward.” (Crunchyroll interview, November 16, 2018.) That emphasis on players shaping events helps explain why a campaign transcript is meaningful evidence—and why a fantasy anime that merely has a party is not the same thing.
