Spoilers for all three seasons of Netflix’s scripted Squid Game. This is an editorial ranking, not an official Netflix list. It weighs character development, dramatic importance, moral complexity, memorable choices, and performance—not virtue or survival alone. “Best” here means the most compelling characters to watch, rather than the most admirable people.
How these characters are ranked
The order gives the greatest weight to how fully a character shapes the drama across their appearances. A vivid performance or unforgettable scene matters, but neither automatically outranks a character whose choices drive the series’ central conflict. The ranking also distinguishes a complete character arc from sheer scene impact: a smaller role can be excellent without carrying the same narrative weight as a lead.
Netflix’s official Season 3 cast guide and series page establish the returning and new ensemble, but they do not publish a best-character ranking. The choices below are the writer’s judgment.
The 10 best Squid Game characters, ranked
-
Seong Gi-hun (Player 456)
Gi-hun earns the top spot because the series’ moral and emotional conflict runs through him. He begins as a struggling gambler trying to secure money and preserve a connection with his estranged daughter. Winning the first competition does not restore him to ordinary life: survivor’s remorse turns into a determination to stop the games, and that mission tests the compassion that once made him easy to exploit.

His defining strength is also his vulnerability. Gi-hun wants to believe people can choose solidarity under pressure, even when the system keeps punishing that belief. In Season 3, the failed rebellion and Jung-bae’s death leave him facing the consequences of that conviction. Lee Jung-jae’s performance makes his grief and resolve feel inseparable. Netflix’s cast guide describes his change of purpose; the series’ central question is whether he can resist becoming like the people he opposes.
-
The Front Man (Hwang In-ho)
The Front Man is the strongest counterweight to Gi-hun: a former winner who now operates the competition and, in Season 2, enters it under the identity Player 001. That history makes him more than a masked administrator. He understands what the games do to people from the inside, yet chooses to uphold them and confront Gi-hun from within the contest.
His defining tension is the distance between what he has survived and what he has become. Lee Byung-hun gives the role a controlled menace that leaves room for uncertainty about how much of In-ho’s former self remains. As the series’ most direct ideological antagonist, he ranks just below Gi-hun: his impact is enormous, but the story’s emotional point of view belongs primarily to his opponent. Netflix’s Season 3 guide identifies him as a former winner and Gi-hun’s adversary; its Season 3 plot guide recaps his Player 001 disguise.
-
Kang Sae-byeok (Player 067)
Sae-byeok gives the first season one of its clearest portraits of survival as both strategy and burden. Her guardedness is not a lack of feeling; it is a way of protecting the future she wants for her family. That contrast—care hidden behind self-reliance—makes her choices affecting without turning her into a symbol of uncomplicated goodness.

Please review EULA and Privacy policy. She ranks high for the emotional force of her characterization and the way her goals remain distinct from Gi-hun’s. Her story also shows how the game makes trust costly: tenderness can exist, but it does not cancel danger. Her arc is concentrated in the first season rather than built across all three, which keeps her below the characters who shape the series’ full trajectory.

-
Cho Sang-woo (Player 218)
Sang-woo is compelling because his betrayal grows out of traits that once looked like promise: intelligence, ambition, and the ability to make hard choices. His history with Gi-hun gives their conflict personal weight, while his escalating decisions expose the difference between being clever enough to survive and being willing to pay any price for it.
He is not the most morally admirable character on this list, but moral admiration is not the measure. Sang-woo’s importance comes from making the game’s pressure visible in a person who has much to lose and knows how to calculate risk. His role also gives Gi-hun’s belief in mutual care its most painful test.
-
Cho Hyun-ju (Player 120)
Hyun-ju stands out among the later-season players for combining practical competence with a clear sense of responsibility toward others. In an environment built to make cooperation feel dangerous, her willingness to act alongside people rather than treat them only as obstacles gives the group scenes moral texture.

Please review EULA and Privacy policy. Her place in the top five reflects both the strength of her presence and the value of adding a different kind of survivor to the ensemble: not a strategist defined by cold calculation, nor a lead whose entire arc carries the series. Netflix’s Season 3 cast guide lists Hyun-ju among the major players; her ranking here reflects the character’s impact in the drama, not a claim about popularity.
-
Jang Geum-ja (Player 149)
Geum-ja brings an unusual combination of age, humor, and fierce protectiveness to the competition. Her presence complicates the usual image of a player: she is not defined only by physical strength or by the ability to outthink opponents, but by the relationships she tries to preserve under pressure.
Rank #3
Disguise Womens Triangle Costume Mask, Triangle- OFFICIALLY LICENSED TRIANGLE MASK FROM SQUID GAME - Become the second tier henchmen with this Squid Game Triangle mask!
- AUTHENTIC SQUID GAME COSTUME ACCESSORY - This mask has a triangle print on the front that matches the real look on the Netflix series
- EASY TO WEAR SQUID GAME COSPLAY MASK - Includes and adjustable elastic strap so you can masquerade in this mask all night
- SQUID GAME INSPIRED COSTUME ACCESSORY - Halloween costume parties won't be the same now that you have this super cool mask
- QUALITY SQUID GAME COSTUMES AND ACCESSORIES - To keep this triangle mask maintained, we recommend spot cleaning - includes mask only (does not include rest of costume).
That protective instinct can be both a source of courage and a vulnerability. Geum-ja matters because her choices put family loyalty into the same brutal moral landscape as self-preservation. She ranks below the longer-running central figures because her story has less reach across the full series, but her emotional stakes make her one of its most memorable later additions. Netflix includes her in its Season 3 ensemble guide.
-
Kang No-eul
No-eul expands the story beyond the players by showing the human cost of working inside the machinery of the games. Her perspective adds a different form of tension: survival is not limited to contestants, and proximity to the system does not mean a person has freely chosen its cruelty.

Please review EULA and Privacy policy. She ranks seventh because that perspective enriches the series, even though it does not displace the central Gi-hun–Front Man conflict. Her importance lies in widening the moral frame around the competition and giving the later-season ensemble another route into questions of complicity and resistance. Netflix identifies No-eul as a major new player in its Season 3 cast guide.
-
Kim Jun-hee (Player 222)
Jun-hee’s place in the later-season story comes from the way personal vulnerability collides with the game’s relentless demands. Her stakes are not abstract: the choices around her become questions of care, responsibility, and what a person can endure when circumstances strip away safety.
She ranks eighth because her character broadens the emotional register of the final-season group, though she does not carry the same series-wide development as the top entries. Netflix’s cast guide includes her among the major Season 3 players.

-
The Recruiter
The Recruiter is a relatively brief but potent embodiment of how the games reach beyond the arena. His polished manner and unnerving invitation turn the promise of money into a trap long before players see the scale of the competition. He helps establish the story’s world through a memorable performance rather than a long character arc.

Please review EULA and Privacy policy. That distinction explains his position: the role is a scene-stealer and a crucial point of entry, but has less development and sustained dramatic importance than the main players. He is an example of why “best character” and “most screen time” are not the same thing.
-
Lee Myung-gi (Player 333)
Myung-gi rounds out the list as a later-season player whose past and self-interest complicate the group’s shifting alliances. He contributes to the series’ ongoing interest in the stories people tell about themselves when survival depends on being trusted—or appearing trustworthy.
He ranks tenth because his role adds useful friction to the final-season ensemble but does not carry the accumulated emotional or thematic weight of the characters above him. Netflix’s Season 3 cast guide names him among the major new players.
Why the ranking is not a popularity poll
Netflix reported that Season 3 received 60.1 million views in its first three days and ranked first in all 93 countries where Netflix had Top 10 lists. Those are series-viewing figures, not votes for individual characters or evidence that any one person is the audience’s favorite. The distinction matters: memorable, morally difficult characters can be central to the show without being universally liked. (Netflix, audience roundup.)

The final season continues after the failed rebellion and Jung-bae’s death, bringing the scripted series to its conclusion. Netflix’s Season 3 plot guide sets out that starting point, while the official series page identifies the final season. This ranking is about the drama’s characters, not contestants from the separate reality competition Squid Game: The Challenge.
