What is The Carpenter’s Son about?
Written and directed by Lotfy Nathan, the 2025 supernatural horror film centers on a carpenter, his wife, and their teenage son in a remote village in Roman-era Egypt. In distributor Magnolia Pictures’ synopsis, Nicolas Cage plays Joseph, FKA twigs plays Mary, and Noah Jupe plays Jesus. The family faces supernatural forces as Jesus encounters temptation and begins to grapple with his powers.
The setup makes the family relationship part of the horror rather than treating the supernatural premise as an isolated scare machine: a son is changing, and his father must contend with what that change means. That gives the film a promising emotional anchor. The question is whether the drama and the supernatural conflict come together as one coherent experience—a point on which the critical response has been mixed.
Why the source material makes the premise unusual
The film draws on the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, an early Christian text about Jesus’ childhood that is apocryphal and not part of the New Testament canon. It should not be mistaken for a retelling of the canonical Gospel accounts. The distinction matters: this source tradition gives filmmakers room to explore episodes of childhood power and behavior that can feel startling to a modern audience.

In an Associated Press report, Nathan described the source as a sequence of events without a conventional dramatic arc, and said he developed narrative material around it. That adaptation challenge is central to the film’s promise and risk. A collection of unsettling childhood episodes can supply potent horror imagery and moral unease, but it does not automatically provide the shape or momentum of a feature-length family drama.
AP also spoke with early-Christianity scholars Tony Burke and Joan E. Taylor about the text’s circulation outside the canon and its portrayal of Jesus’ powers and conduct. Their context helps explain why this material can strike viewers as provocative; it does not make the film a historical account of Jesus’ childhood.

Does the horror work?
The film’s strongest point is its underlying contradiction: the child at its center is both a son within a vulnerable family and a figure whose emerging powers invite fear, temptation, and conflict. That tension can make for more interesting horror than a straightforward supernatural threat, because the danger is bound up with parental trust and the limits of protection.
Yet an unusual premise is not the same as a successful dramatic arc. The critic excerpts collected on Rotten Tomatoes include descriptions of a peculiar film with possible cult appeal whose execution falls short, as well as the phrase “tonally confused.” Those are examples of critical reaction, not proof of a unanimous verdict or a stable aggregate score. Still, they point to the film’s central difficulty: its religious subject, family drama, and horror elements need to reinforce one another rather than pull in different directions.

Without a scene-by-scene account to support more specific claims, it would be misleading to declare the film visually effective, frightening, or emotionally persuasive in particular moments. What can be said is that the premise creates a compelling test for the execution—and the available critical response suggests that the film does not satisfy every reviewer on that score.
How do Cage and the family premise shape the film?
Cage’s Joseph is positioned as a father confronting a crisis he cannot readily understand or control. The role could turn the supernatural premise into an intimate story about fear and responsibility, rather than simply a spectacle around a sacred figure. Cage told the Associated Press, “Nobody wanted to offend anybody in the making of this movie.” AP also reported that he initially saw the script as “a family drama about an existential crisis.”

Those comments describe the filmmakers’ intentions, not a guarantee of what the finished film achieves. The mixed critical descriptions make the distinction important: an existential family drama and a religious horror film can coexist, but the tonal shifts between them may be part of what some reviewers found difficult.

It is most worth considering if you’re curious about horror built from non-canonical early Christian material, or if the idea of placing Joseph, Mary, and Jesus inside a supernatural family conflict interests you. The source gives the film a less familiar starting point than a conventional biblical retelling, and its premise raises questions about power, childhood, and parental protection.

Approach it more cautiously if you want a tightly unified horror story. The critical excerpts suggest that the film’s conception may be more consistently intriguing than its execution. That makes it a potentially rewarding curiosity for viewers interested in the premise, rather than an easy recommendation to anyone looking for assured, conventionally paced horror.
Release and runtime
Box Office Mojo lists November 14, 2025, as the film’s earliest US domestic release date; that date is not a worldwide premiere marker. Prime Video’s consulted listing gives a runtime of 1 hour 34 minutes, while the BBFC’s theatrical classification record lists 94 minutes 17 seconds.
