Spoilers for the ending of The Brutalist. The film’s 1980 Venice epilogue reframes László Tóth’s Institute as more than an architectural achievement: it is also a public monument shaped by private trauma and a life that helped secure a future for his niece, Zsófia. The final claim that “it is the destination, not the journey” is deliberately unsettled by everything the film has shown about the cost of getting there.
What happens at the end of The Brutalist?
After Erzsébet confronts Harrison Lee Van Buren over his sexual assault of László, the film jumps forward to 1980. László is now old and visibly frail, and his niece Zsófia speaks for him at a Venice retrospective devoted to his work. Her account connects the Institute’s public history to the Tóth family’s experience.
The film does not fill in every year between the confrontation and the retrospective. Nor does it confirm Van Buren’s fate. Director Brady Corbet has said that Van Buren’s precise outcome is beside the point once his character has been dismantled; actor Guy Pearce has also resisted treating the possibility of suicide as certain. The ending leaves that thread unresolved rather than supplying a neat punishment or final accounting. The Los Angeles Times interview with Corbet and cast discusses both ambiguities.
Why is the Institute important?
The fictional Institute is a community center and church commissioned by Van Buren and designed by László. It is both a work of architecture and the result of an unequal relationship: a wealthy patron has the power to fund the project, while the immigrant architect must work within his demands.

Its form reflects that tension. The building’s monumental mass, underground passages, and bunker-like rooms can feel confining. Production designer Judy Becker described the low, narrow central passage and room proportions as deliberately evocative of imprisonment; openings and larger spaces provide moments of relief. Architectural Record’s account of the film’s design details these choices.
Zsófia’s retrospective explanation invites viewers to see the Institute’s Christian and communal purpose alongside a more private meaning: its design also carries the Tóths’ history of captivity as Eastern European Jews. That is an interpretation supported by the building’s form and the epilogue, not a single definitive explanation delivered by László. The Institute can be read as an achievement, a compromise with a powerful patron, and an architectural vessel for memory at the same time.

What does Zsófia’s speech say about László’s legacy?
At the retrospective, Zsófia has a voice in the public account of László’s work while he himself cannot speak. The setting honors him, but it also shows how a life and body of work become a story interpreted for others. The Institute’s meaning is no longer solely in its plans or in the intentions of the people who commissioned it; it is also in what the family remembers and what Zsófia can tell an audience.
Corbet has said that László’s legacy is not necessarily the buildings he left behind, but his family and especially Zsófia. In his reading, László’s accomplishments helped make possible a life for her that she might not otherwise have had. That shifts the measure of success from the monument alone to the human future connected to it. Corbet made that point in the Los Angeles Times interview.

Why does the last line say “the destination, not the journey”?
Zsófia’s closing assertion—“No matter what the others try and sell you, it is the destination, not the journey”—sounds like a defense of the completed work and what it made possible. Yet the film has spent much of its time showing the displacement, trauma, exploitation, and loss bound up with László’s journey. The line therefore lands as a challenge as much as a conclusion: can a destination justify its cost, or does praising the outcome risk obscuring who suffered along the way?
The wording also matters because “what the others try and sell you” evokes the persuasive stories institutions and patrons tell about achievement. Van Buren’s patronage becomes a claim to possess not only the artist’s work but the artist himself. Corbet described that dynamic as a desire to possess the artist; after the assault, Erzsébet’s confrontation makes the abuse explicit. Her accusation names the harm, but the film does not turn it into a tidy moral resolution.

Felicity Jones has described the film as full of hope that comes from trauma. That is her interpretation, not a guarantee that trauma is resolved. The film allows hope and damage to coexist without making one cancel the other.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Three ways to read the ending
- Achievement and cost: The Institute is an enduring accomplishment, but its grandeur does not erase the suffering entangled with its creation. The last line can sound affirming while still exposing the price hidden in a triumph narrative.
- Architecture and family: László’s lasting legacy may include both the Institute and the life his work helped make possible for Zsófia. The epilogue connects public art to private inheritance rather than forcing a choice between them.
- Intention and interpretation: László designed the Institute, but at the retrospective Zsófia frames what it means. The work survives, yet its meaning is shaped by memory and by the people who explain it after its maker can no longer do so.
These readings are compatible, and none is presented as the one correct answer. Corbet calls the film a story about legacy, but he has not declared a definitive interpretation of Zsófia’s last line.

Why the ending’s Venice setting matters
The 1980 Venice retrospective gives László’s work a public stage far removed from the personal struggle behind it. The film began with an immigrant architect trying to establish a life and practice in the United States; it ends with his work being assessed in an international cultural setting, through the testimony of someone who carries the family story.
That contrast makes the final scene both a recognition and a complication. A retrospective can honor an artist, but it can also turn experience into a polished public narrative. Zsófia’s words preserve the family’s place within that narrative, while the film leaves viewers to consider what any account of artistic legacy leaves out.
