The interview came roughly a year after Oher filed his petition. He had not previously spoken at length publicly about the dispute, which drew renewed attention because of the popularity of the 2009 film.
What did Oher’s petition allege?
On August 14, 2023, Oher filed a petition in Shelby County Probate Court concerning a conservatorship established in 2004, after he turned 18. According to the Associated Press report on the filing, Oher alleged that he had been led to believe the paperwork would make him part of the Tuohy family through adoption, but that it instead created a conservatorship.

He asked the court to terminate the arrangement and sought a financial accounting and other relief related to the use of his name and story. These were allegations in his petition; they should not be treated as facts established by a court. The filing is available through DocumentCloud’s reproduction of the petition.
How did the Tuohys respond?
The Tuohys denied that they deceived Oher or enriched themselves unfairly at his expense. In their court response, they said proceeds from the film had been shared among family members, including Oher. That is their account, which conflicts with Oher’s claims; the cited reporting does not resolve the disputed amounts or provide a final judicial accounting.

Their denial and response were reported by the Associated Press and ABC News. The existence of competing accounts is important: neither a party’s allegation nor a denial, by itself, settles what happened.
Was Michael Oher adopted by the Tuohys?
Oher’s petition said there was no adoption and alleged he understood the 2004 papers as an adoption. The Tuohys disputed his allegations and described their relationship with him differently. The materials cited here therefore do not support presenting “adopted” as an uncontested description of the legal arrangement. The reported court action concerned a conservatorship.

What did the court decide about the conservatorship?
In September 2023, a Tennessee judge said the conservatorship would be terminated. The Associated Press reported that the broader financial dispute would continue. Ending the conservatorship was a procedural development, not a ruling that resolved every allegation about the film, money, or the parties’ conduct. The Associated Press coverage of the judge’s statement distinguishes the termination from the remaining dispute.
How does the dispute relate to The Blind Side?
The dispute involves the story told in Michael Lewis’s 2006 book, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game, and its 2009 film adaptation. The book and film brought Oher’s life story to a broad audience, but their popularity does not prove or disprove the claims in court. What is the status of the lawsuit?
The sources cited here establish that Oher filed his petition in August 2023, that the Tuohys denied his allegations, and that a judge said the conservatorship would end in September 2023. Contemporaneous reporting said financial issues remained. They do not establish a final disposition of any remaining claims as of October 7, 2026. Without a current court record or authoritative reporting, it would be inaccurate to say the remaining claims were settled, tried, decided, or closed.
