The Bear won the 2023 Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, and cast member Ebon Moss-Bachrach kissed Matty Matheson during the acceptance speech. The ceremony was broadcast on January 15, 2024—the 2023 label refers to the awards cycle, not the date it aired.
Did The Bear win the 2023 Emmy for comedy series?
Yes. The Television Academy lists The Bear as the winner of Outstanding Comedy Series for the 2023 awards cycle. That is the official category name; “Best Comedy Series” is a common shorthand.
The award honored programs first aired between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023. The Television Academy’s winner record lists the series in the category.
Why were the 2023 Emmy Awards held in 2024?
The 75th Emmy Awards were postponed from their planned September 2023 date because of the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Fox televised the ceremony on January 15, 2024. It remained the 2023 awards cycle because the award year reflects the programs’ eligibility period, not the ceremony’s calendar date.

The kiss came as Matheson spoke about restaurants and hospitality. The Associated Press quoted him saying: “I just love restaurants so much. The good, the bad. It’s rough.” He continued: “We’re all broken inside and every single day we gotta show up and cook and make people feel good by eating something and sitting at a table.” The Associated Press account carries the speech excerpt, while TIME’s report describes the onstage moment.
