Spoilers for the Part 3 finale. Leia’s immediate future is settled: she can stay in Point Place with her friends for the school year instead of leaving with her parents. Donna’s own plans, however, remain undecided. The finale deliberately ends with the family’s longer-term arrangement—and Leia and Jay’s relationship—still unresolved.
Does Leia stay in Point Place?
Yes, for the school year. The plan follows Eric getting his dream job in California. Donna proposes that Leia remain in Wisconsin while Donna moves between her work in Chicago, Point Place, and the West Coast. Leia embraces the idea, and Donna agrees because she knows how much her daughter wants to stay. TheWrap reported this account from Laura Prepon, who played Donna and directed all eight Part 3 episodes, in an interview published August 22, 2024 (TheWrap interview with Laura Prepon).
That is a school-year arrangement, not a permanent answer about where Leia or the family will live. The official Netflix synopsis places Part 3 in summer 1996 and frames the story around Leia facing the end of her time in Point Place as summer winds down (Netflix Media Center).
Does Donna move back to Point Place?
The finale does not confirm that Donna has decided to move back. Red tells his support group that she is staying, but Donna does not make that declaration herself on screen. His statement may reflect what he believes or hopes; it is not a definitive answer from Donna.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prepon told TheWrap that the ending was left open while the writers did not know whether the show would continue. So the uncertainty about Donna’s location is intentional, not a hidden decision the finale expects viewers to infer as settled.
Do Leia and Jay break up?
The finale raises the possibility of trouble without confirming a breakup. Netflix’s episode description for “Kids in America” says Leia’s last day in town becomes complicated when Jay doubts their long-distance relationship. It does not say they end the relationship, and the episode description offers no definitive outcome (Netflix’s official title and episode listings).

Why does the ending leave so much unresolved?
Prepon described the ending as open-ended because the writers did not know whether Netflix would order more episodes. The uncertainty gives the finale room to send Leia into a new school-year plan while leaving Donna’s choice and the family’s future unsettled. It also lets Jay’s doubts remain a source of tension rather than resolving the relationship in a single episode.
Later, What’s on Netflix reported in October 2024 that Kurtwood Smith had announced the show would not return for a third season, also called Part 4, on Netflix and that it would be shopped around. That is secondary reporting, not a Netflix announcement. It does not supply an on-screen resolution to the cliffhanger or establish what happens to the characters after the finale.

What is decided—and what is left open?
| Question | What the finale establishes |
|---|---|
| Does Leia stay in Point Place? | Donna agrees that Leia can stay with her friends for the school year. |
| Why does the plan change? | Eric gets a dream job in California, prompting a new family arrangement. |
| Does Donna move back? | Not confirmed. Red says she is staying, but Donna does not directly confirm it. |
| Do Leia and Jay break up? | Not confirmed. The official episode description mentions Jay’s doubts about long distance, not a breakup. |
| Is the family’s long-term arrangement settled? | No. The finale leaves it open. |
Is Part 3 the series finale?
Netflix’s title page lists the series as having three parts, and Part 3’s last episode is “Kids in America.” Later reporting said there would be no Part 4 on Netflix, but the reported cancellation does not change the story’s unresolved ending. The characters’ futures remain where the finale leaves them: Leia has a plan for the school year, while Donna’s decision and the family’s longer-term living arrangement are unknown.
