Emily weighs whether to speak for her brother Ethan, while Maeve tries to get young Sam to safety—and discovers how quickly Robbie’s choices can pull her back into danger.
What happens in Task episode 2?
In “Family Statements,” the search for Sam continues as Robbie keeps the child at his home and gives him a false explanation for why he has to stay. Robbie’s plan to turn the robbery’s proceeds into help for his family is already more dangerous than it appears: the stolen bag contains fentanyl, not cash. That mistake connects his immediate problem to the Dark Hearts and raises the stakes well beyond the missing money.
At the same time, Tom’s family faces a court decision about Ethan, whose crime has left the family grieving and divided. The two storylines meet around a difficult question: when does trying to protect someone become another way of avoiding accountability?
Why is Emily unsure about writing a statement for Ethan?
Emily is asked to consider a family impact statement for her brother, but she fears that speaking in his support could help him get released. She also worries that prison will not give him the help he needs. Her hesitation is not a simple choice between forgiving Ethan and rejecting him: she is trying to reckon with the harm he caused while fearing what could happen to him next.

What did Ethan do to Tom’s wife?
The episode discloses that Ethan killed Tom’s wife and was off psychiatric medication at the time. This is a plot revelation, not an explanation that removes responsibility for the crime. For Tom, the court proceedings bring his work as an FBI agent into sharp collision with private grief; the case is not only an investigation or a sentencing question, but a loss his family still has to live with.
A family dinner turns grief into a public divide
At a tense dinner, Sara’s arrival and remarks expose disagreement over who belongs in the Brandis family and what loyalty to Ethan should mean. The scene makes the idea of a “family statement” feel larger than a court document: everyone is being pressed to decide what they owe Ethan, one another, and the person he killed.

Why does Maeve try to turn Sam in?
Maeve realizes Robbie has taken Sam and tries to get him to authorities through an anonymous emergency call. She is attempting to get the child out of a situation she recognizes as dangerous, even though involving police could also expose her own connection to Robbie.
Sam returns to Maeve’s car before officers can find him. The encounter leaves her in a precarious position with Tom and other officers, but she gets away and returns home with Sam. Her attempt does not resolve the family’s criminal entanglement; it shows how little room she has to act safely when Robbie’s decisions have put a child in the middle.

In a TV Insider interview, Emilia Jones described Maeve as wanting to do the right thing while feeling stuck and losing her sense of identity. Jones also said Robbie’s actions pull Maeve back toward criminal activity she has been around before. That perspective helps explain why Maeve’s choice is both an act of protection and a sign of how constrained she feels.
How does the stolen fentanyl connect Robbie to the Dark Hearts?
The bag’s contents turn Robbie’s robbery into a conflict with the Dark Hearts, whose fentanyl business gives them a reason to pursue what he took. The episode also links Robbie’s personal stake to his late brother Billy: the recap in Esquire explains that Billy’s death is tied to Jayson. Robbie’s effort to provide for his family is therefore tangled up with grief, revenge, and a dangerous criminal network. A sympathetic motive does not make his choices harmless, particularly when Sam and Maeve are exposed to the consequences.

What makes “Family Statements” a turning point?
The episode braids three different kinds of pressure rather than treating family as a safe counterweight to crime. Tom must face a court process connected to his own loss while continuing to work in law enforcement. Emily has to consider whether compassion for Ethan can coexist with accountability. Maeve tries to protect Sam, but Robbie’s actions leave her with no clean route out.
That tension is the hour’s central drama: protection can be sincere and still cause harm, and loyalty can become a demand that others carry the cost. The episode closes without settling the Brandis family’s criminal predicament, leaving Robbie’s choices and Maeve’s attempt to intervene unresolved.
