Who are Hannah, Edwin, and Kodiak?
Hannah and Edwin are scientists studying frogs, and Kodiak is their guide. Ashley Sutton plays Hannah, Nelson Franklin plays Edwin, and Joel McHale plays Kodiak. They are not part of the group’s story until their expedition brings them into contact with the stranded Yellowjackets.
Hannah’s arrival gives the episode an outside perspective on the girls’ increasingly brutal world. Sutton described the character as a way for viewers to enter that wilderness story; that is the actor’s reading of Hannah’s function, rather than a confirmed statement of the creators’ intent. Hannah is frightened, but she is not simply a witness to the danger: she has to decide how to respond to it.

What happens when the researchers find the Yellowjackets?
The three travelers come across the group during a feast around Coach Ben’s body. Edwin is horrified by what he sees. Lottie attacks him with an axe and kills him.
Kodiak fires his crossbow and hits Melissa in the chest. The moment turns the encounter into an immediate fight for survival: Hannah and Kodiak flee as the Yellowjackets pursue them.
Why does Hannah record a message for her daughter?
Hannah believes she may not make it out alive, so she records a message for her daughter. The scene gives her fear a personal stake beyond the immediate chase: she is trying to leave something behind for the person she may never see again.
Sutton sees Hannah’s choice to face the Yellowjackets rather than stay hidden as an early act of self-assertion. “That moment where she faces the Yellowjackets is one of the first moments where she does stand up for herself and starts to fight for herself,” Sutton said. It does not make Hannah fearless; it shows her acting despite the fear.

What happens to Kodiak at the end of “Croak”?
The episode ends on a cliffhanger involving Kodiak, Travis, and Akilah. It does not resolve Kodiak’s fate, so the immediate answer is that he is still in danger when the episode cuts away.
Later-season spoiler: Paramount+’s season-wide recap says Hannah later kills Kodiak while trying to escape. That happens after “Croak” and is not the outcome shown in Episode 7.
Does “Croak” explain the supernatural mystery?
No definitive answer is established here. Sutton said, “I don’t know the answer to the supernatural question, but I think it is interesting what the human mind can create—what we can create that’s maybe not real—which is fun to see on screen.” That is the actor’s perspective on the show’s ambiguity, not a canon explanation.
