‘With Love, Meghan’ Is Full of Contradictions—and That’s the Point

With Love, Meghan presents simple domestic projects in an immaculate, privileged setting. Critics disagree on whether that contrast is a limitation, a charm or both.

With Love, Meghan invites viewers to find pleasure in everyday domestic projects, but presents them in a world of immaculate kitchens, abundant flowers and leisurely hosting. That gap is the show’s central tension: some critics see an approachable, deliberately modest lifestyle series; others see a polished fantasy whose wealth and staging make its advice feel distant from ordinary life.

What With Love, Meghan sets out to be

Netflix describes the series as a lifestyle show produced by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, combining practical how-tos with conversations among friends. Its first season has eight episodes built around cooking, gardening and hosting, with guests including chefs Roy Choi and Alice Waters and actor Mindy Kaling. Activities range from cooking to harvesting honey and assembling balloon arches. The format recalls Meghan’s pre-royal lifestyle blog, The Tig, and ABC News argues that the show was not trying to break new ground.

That modest ambition matters. ABC’s sympathetic reading is that this is low-stakes lifestyle entertainment, not a culinary masterclass. Meghan calls the projects uncomplicated and thoughtful, and says, “It’s not rocket science. Clearly, I’m not a rocket scientist.” The line makes the invitation plain: viewers need not be experts to enjoy making something or welcoming people.

Why the show’s approachability can feel at odds with its look

Everyday tasks, unusually polished surroundings

The show’s language lowers the stakes, while its images raise them. Flowers, carefully arranged food, spacious rooms and elaborate hosting rituals make ordinary projects look exceptionally curated. The Guardian criticizes the cost and tone of activities presented against a backdrop of economic hardship. TIME likewise argues that the immaculate setting complicates the show’s suggestion of personal access.

Netflix identifies Montecito, California, as the filming location. The Guardian and TIME report that the show was filmed at a nearby rental or separate property rather than the couple’s family home; that is the publications’ reporting, not a Netflix statement about the production location. The distinction matters to the viewing experience: a lifestyle show can offer escapism, but a setting that looks personal while being separate from the host’s home may also make its intimacy feel carefully constructed.

Domestic expertise, with visible help

The show also balances a domestic-goddess persona with scenes of Meghan receiving guidance or relying on specialists, including a beekeeper. The Atlantic sees a useful contradiction here: the assistance and occasional uncertainty complicate an image of effortless mastery, but can also make the series entertaining and visually appealing. The question is not whether a host may ask for help; it is whether the show’s presentation acknowledges the labor and expertise behind the finished result.

Why critics disagree about the contradictions

The disagreements are about what viewers should expect from the format. ABC News treats the series as a harmless return to lifestyle content and finds its practical tips consistent with a deliberately modest show. The Atlantic’s response is mixed but affectionate: the polished imagery has appeal, even as the visible assistance undercuts the idea of effortless domestic expertise.

Other reviewers focus on distance and performance. The Upcoming argues that the show centers Meghan while making too little use of guests’ experience and expertise, and questions advice filmed outside the host’s real home. The Guardian describes guest exchanges as stilted and finds the tone out of step with economic hardship. TIME reads the polished rental kitchen as part of a broader performance of perfection. These are critics’ interpretations, not a consensus verdict.

The difference can be understood through five questions: Does the host demonstrate a task or delegate it? Do guests get room to share what they know? Is the filming setting clear? Does the show explain the work, cost and materials behind a project? And is its main promise instruction, escapism or personality-driven entertainment? The reviews suggest that With Love, Meghan is strongest as polished, personality-led viewing and less convincing when its approachable language is taken as a promise of broadly accessible instruction.

Release timing and the season-one audience figure

Netflix moved the planned January 2025 premiere to March 4, 2025, at Meghan’s request because of the Los Angeles wildfires. Netflix’s announcement also identifies Montecito as the filming location.

The Independent’s 2025 review of the second season reports 5.3 million viewing figures for season one and says the show did not rank among Netflix’s top 300 shows in the first half of 2025. That is a figure reported by The Independent, not a Netflix-published audience metric. The same review reports an extended multi-year first-look deal for future Archewell film and television projects; the terms are not independently verified here.

Where to find recipes and crafts from With Love, Meghan

Netflix’s explainer asks, “Where can I find the recipes and crafts from With Love, Meghan?” It says many recipes and how-tos inspired by the series are collected in its related material. Readers looking to try an activity can use those instructions as a starting point, while keeping in mind that a finished scene may conceal time, labor or materials that are not part of the on-screen presentation.
