Win or Lose Review: Pixar’s First Original Series Is More Than Meets the Eye

Win or Lose uses a middle-school softball championship as its shared destination, but its real subject is how differently people experience the same world. Pixar’s first original long-form animated series revisits the week before the Pickles’ big game through characters connected to the team, making perspective—not the score—the central dramatic idea.

What is Win or Lose about?

The Pickles are a co-ed middle-school softball team preparing for its championship game. Rather than tell that week through one lead character, the series follows eight people connected to the team, including players, a parent and an umpire. Each episode shifts attention to someone’s life away from the field and point of view. The game gives the stories a common timeline and stakes; the people around it give the series its emotional range.

Pixar describes the project as its first-ever original long-form animated series. Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates created and directed it, and also served as writers and executive producers. David Lally produced and executive produced the series. Pixar’s official series page lists all episodes as streaming on Disney+; catalog availability can change.

Do the perspective shifts make the story richer?

They are the show’s defining choice, not a decorative format. A shared championship week lets the series return to a familiar setting while changing whose hopes, worries or assumptions shape what the viewer sees. An event that seems straightforward from one angle can carry a different meaning for someone else. That structure gives the softball contest a useful role: it holds the stories together without requiring every character’s life to revolve around the result.

In a February 20, 2025 interview with Disney, Hobson and Yates said they wanted a nonlinear, multi-protagonist format that could accommodate stories they felt were not suited to a film. “We came to the table also knowing we wanted to tell the types of stories we couldn’t tell in a film format.” The ambition is well matched to a series: multiple viewpoints have room to develop, and the viewer can reconsider the shared world as new characters come into focus.

The creators also described the goal in terms of empathy: “Win or Lose has always been about walking a mile in someone else’s shoes and seeing life the way they see it.” The format supports that intention by making each character’s perspective part of the storytelling, rather than simply explaining that people see things differently.

How do the animation and tone support each character?

A perspective-driven story needs more than a new narrator every episode. Its visual and tonal shifts have to help distinguish one character’s experience from another’s, while still making the stories feel like parts of the same series. That is the key test for Win or Lose: do changes in visual treatment make each viewpoint clearer and more emotionally specific, or do they remain surface-level variations?

A Pixar Post review published February 19, 2025 notes variation in lighting, camera and character techniques. Its writers watched the first four episodes and said they found the themes relevant to different age groups. Those observations suggest a series willing to vary its visual language alongside its points of view. They are the assessment of that outlet’s early review, not a season-wide critical consensus or a survey of viewers.

Does the championship game provide satisfying stakes?

The championship is a connective thread, not the only measure of whether the stories matter. The more interesting question is whether separate lives and viewpoints accumulate into a compelling sense of what the game means to the people approaching it. The premise gives the series a clear destination; its success depends on making the routes there feel distinct and connected.

That balance is also what makes the show’s sports setting accessible beyond softball fans. The team creates shared pressure and anticipation, while the focus on family members and other people around the players opens the story beyond competition. The game can matter without being the answer to every character’s concerns.

Who is Win or Lose for?

Viewers looking for a conventional sports story centered on training, wins and losses may find the ensemble structure more interested in people than play-by-play. Those drawn to character-led animation, shifting perspectives and the emotional lives surrounding a team are closer to the series’ strengths. Its central question is less simply who wins than how people share a week—and a world—while experiencing it differently.
