Spoilers for the series finale. Guillermo does not leave the vampires: after the documentary crew wraps, he tells Nandor he is staying. The two choose friendship rather than a relationship bound by master and familiar, then descend together into Nandor’s underground lair. The episode confirms that Guillermo remains with the household; it leaves any future adventures—and any formal vigilante partnership—unresolved.
Why does the documentary crew leave?
After following the household for six years, the documentary crew abruptly packs up. Guillermo is upset that the film may not capture the vampires’ “glory,” while the others point out that the household has been filmed before. Old footage, attributed in the episode to a 1950s documentary by the Maysles brothers, shows the vampires carrying on familiar routines across decades.
The contrast gives the wrap-up its emotional tension: Guillermo wants the ending to feel meaningful, while the vampires’ long lives make one more documentary conclusion seem less momentous. That reading is an interpretation of the episode’s scenes, not a stated creator explanation. TVLine’s finale recap covers the footage and the crew’s departure.
Is Nadja’s “perfect ending” real?
No. As the characters try to manufacture a more satisfying conclusion, Nadja hypnotizes the audience into imagining a heightened, movie-style resolution. The gag nods to The Usual Suspects, but the imagined finale is not what literally happens to the household. The documentary then wraps in the less grand, deliberately abrupt way the episode has set up.

Does Guillermo leave Nandor?
No. After the staged ending, Guillermo returns to Nandor and explains that he is not really leaving; he wanted the documentary to have a good ending. They choose to be friends by choice, rather than continue a bond defined by Nandor as master and Guillermo as familiar. TV Insider’s finale explainer describes the exchange and the shift in their relationship.
What does the final lair scene mean?
Guillermo and Nandor head down to Nandor’s underground lair in a coffin that works as an elevator. It is an affectionate closing image that leaves room to imagine more trouble and companionship, without specifying what happens next.

The ending does not establish that Guillermo becomes a vampire, leaves the household for good, or starts a formal crime-fighting career with Nandor. The Los Angeles Times’ December 16, 2024 discussion framed the question as whether Guillermo would begin a vigilante life with Nandor or leave the vampires behind. The episode answers the departure question—he stays—but leaves a defined partnership open.
Two ways to read the ending
| Reading | What drives it | What it says about the ending |
|---|---|---|
| Bittersweet search for closure | Guillermo’s human desire for a meaningful milestone contrasts with the vampires’ repeated routines and long perspective. | The crew’s departure is a real ending for the documentary, even if the vampires treat it as one event among many. |
| Chosen family with room to continue | Guillermo stays and he and Nandor choose friendship on new terms. | The lair descent suggests possible further adventures, but it is symbolic possibility rather than a literal plan or announcement. |
Both readings fit the finale: the documentary ends, while the characters’ lives are not given a definitive final chapter.

Is there another series or movie planned?
The finale and cast comments invite fans to imagine more stories, but no follow-up series or film is confirmed by the sources cited here. Kristen Schaal described the final beat as a gift that lets fans create adventures in a comic, movie, or fan fiction; that is an expression of possibility, not a production announcement. Salon’s December 17, 2024 interview includes Schaal’s and Kayvan Novak’s reflections on the ending. The series concluded after six seasons; its finale aired December 16, 2024, according to the Los Angeles Times.
