Survivor 48 ended in May 2025, so the question of why Joe Hunter and Eva Erickson “haven’t been eliminated” is now best answered in retrospect: their day-one alliance helped them last, but it was visible, and it did not give them control of every vote. A quieter partnership between Kyle Fraser and Kamilla Karthigesu helped turn Joe and Eva against Shauhin Davari, then gave Kyle a strategic story to tell the jury.
Why did Joe and Eva last so long?
Joe and Eva formed an alliance on day one and stayed together through the final five. Before the finale, Eva told CBS News, “We’ve been together since day one,” and described their shared aim as making it to the end together. Their bond was both personal and strategic: Eva described Joe as an anchor, while their loyalty gave each a dependable voting partner.
That connection was not the only relationship shaping the game. Shauhin later described his own closeness with Joe, while noting that Joe and Eva had a tighter bond for other reasons. The social landscape was overlapping rather than neatly divided into two camps, as TVLine reported.
Why weren’t they eliminated earlier?
The available reporting shows how they reached the final five, but it does not establish that nobody tried to target them or provide a complete vote-by-vote account of every plan. What it does show is that their partnership endured while other players maintained less visible relationships and options.

Joe’s challenge record also helped make him a difficult player to remove directly. He won four immunity challenges before the Episode 12 vote, according to TVLine. But immunity did not amount to control over the vote: in that same episode, Joe and Eva accepted a story that helped send Shauhin home.
How did the Shauhin vote change the game?
After Joe won immunity, Kyle and Kamilla told him Shauhin was turning against him. They strengthened the claim with a story that Shauhin had shown Kamilla an idol—one that did not exist. Joe and Eva believed them, and Shauhin was voted out. The episode reporting from TVLine documents the false idol story and Joe’s fourth immunity win.

The vote mattered beyond Shauhin’s exit. Joe and Eva acted on information Kyle and Kamilla had constructed, while the pair’s own role was not apparent to them. At Final Tribal Council, Kyle and Kamilla could describe their part in the plan as a deliberate strategic result rather than leave the jury with the simpler impression that Joe and Eva had driven the vote.
Was Eva deliberately hiding her strategy?
Eva said after the finale that she sometimes presented herself as less smart to people outside her alliance, including pretending to miscalculate. In her Parade interview, she described the approach this way: “I wanted people to see me as just the dumb jock.” That is Eva’s account of her strategy, not an independently established explanation for every interaction in the game.

- Boxed Game
The approach carried a trade-off: a low-threat image could help her avoid attention, but at the end she also had to make her strategic ability legible to jurors. Eva said she was proud to have persuaded jurors she was smart, though she did not convince enough of them that she deserved the win.
What happened in the finale?
- Final four: Eva beat Kamilla at firemaking, earning a place in the final three.
- Final immunity: Kyle won the final immunity challenge and chose to take Joe to the end. In his post-finale account to Parade, Kyle said he could not sit beside Kamilla and needed a concrete strategic case for the jury.
- Final Tribal Council: Kamilla’s prompt gave Kyle an opening to explain their hidden partnership and the Shauhin plan. Kyle later told TV Insider that he wanted to show the duo’s result, not merely claim that the alliance existed. He described the timing of the reveal as a way to seem natural: “You want to look like you’re organic. You want to look like you’re natural.”
Why didn’t reaching the end secure Joe or Eva the win?
Getting to the final three and persuading a jury are different tasks. Joe’s challenge wins and loyalty were visible, but Kyle and Kamilla could point to a specific vote they had shaped and explain it to the jury. That distinction is more precise than saying Joe simply “dominated”: the immunity record helped him survive, but it did not mean he controlled the information or the Shauhin vote.
