Spoilers for the series finale of What We Do in the Shadows. The finale says goodbye by making the documentary crew’s departure part of the story. Its closing clapperboard seems to mark an ending, but a final twist leaves room for the vampires’ lives—and Guillermo’s choices—to continue beyond the camera.

How the finale turns the documentary into a goodbye

What We Do in the Shadows has always made the camera crew part of its comedy: the vampires perform for the documentary, ignore it, or treat its presence as one more oddity of their household. In the finale, that familiar device acquires a new purpose. The crew is leaving, and the characters have to face the end of the documentary as an event in their own lives.

The Los Angeles Times’ December 16, 2024 coverage describes the goodbye as both a production ending and an in-universe moment. The vampires have been through a documentary before; the crew’s departure is not simply a surprise announcement to them. Camera operators and boom microphones become visible parts of the farewell, and the closing clapperboard gives the episode an unusually literal last word: filming is over.

That gesture works because the show does not abandon its mockumentary form to become sentimental. It lets the mechanics of making a documentary carry the feeling. The crew’s exit is at once a practical end to the film and an absurdly intimate change for the people who have spent years being watched.

Why Guillermo gives the ending its emotional weight

The vampires have centuries of habit behind them. Their routines can absorb another change, another scheme, even another interruption. Guillermo, by contrast, has spent his life in relation to them: first as Nandor’s familiar, then as a human friend within the household. When the crew leaves, his question is not only what the vampires will do next, but what his own life looks like without the structure that has defined it.

The Los Angeles Times frames Guillermo as trying to reckon with the end and what follows. That uncertainty gives the finale its human counterpoint. The vampires may treat a documentary’s conclusion as one more chapter in their long existence; Guillermo has to confront the more immediate question of what comes after a life organized around them.

This is an interpretation of the finale’s effect, not a confirmed answer about Guillermo’s future. The episode makes his uncertainty matter precisely by not turning it into a neat resolution.

What the final twist means—and what it does not confirm

The closing beat opens the possibility of another chapter after the crew’s apparent farewell. It can be read as a joke about the characters carrying on beyond the documentary, as well as a gentle refusal to seal their lives shut just because the series has ended. The camera stops recording; the characters need not stop existing.

But the twist does not establish a particular future for Guillermo, confirm that he leaves the vampires, settle a relationship outcome, or announce a spinoff. The Los Angeles Times describes it as an opening rather than a definitive answer. The most satisfying reading is therefore two-sided: the finale gives the audience a real goodbye while preserving the joke that these creatures will keep getting up to things off-camera.

A final season, not a promise of more

FX identifies season six as the series’ final season. The Walt Disney Company’s July 23, 2024 announcement described it as an 11-episode season, making this the final episode of that run. The announcement said the season would premiere on FX on October 21, 2024, with episodes streaming on Hulu the following day; that was the schedule at the time, not confirmation of current catalog availability.

Cast comments around the season echo the finale’s balance between an ending and an open door. In an October 22, 2024 interview with TheWrap, Kayvan Novak, who plays Nandor, recalled that the goodbye was always in view, but making the season felt like making another season—“capped off with a teary goodbye.” Harvey Guillén, who plays Guillermo, said they could have continued, but that leaving viewers wanting more “leaves the door open for anything possible in the future.” These are cast reflections, not confirmation that a continuation is planned.

Where to watch the finale

The 2024 Disney announcement placed the season’s US premiere on FX and its next-day streaming on Hulu. Streaming rights and catalogs can change by date and territory, so that historical schedule does not establish where the finale is available now.
