Thandiwe Newton plays Dr. Rachael Fairburn, Willow Hill’s chief psychiatrist and public face, in Wednesday Season 2. Netflix’s character guide reveals that Fairburn’s respectable position masks a deeper mystery: Judi hired her to represent the facility while secretly running its LOIS program.
Who does Thandiwe Newton play in Wednesday Season 2?
Newton portrays Dr. Rachael Fairburn, a normie whom Netflix describes as a trailblazer in the emerging field of outcast mental health. Fairburn is Willow Hill’s chief psychiatrist, placing her in a prominent role at the psychiatric facility featured in the season. Netflix’s official cast guide identifies Newton with the role.
What is Dr. Fairburn’s role at Willow Hill?
Fairburn is presented as Willow Hill’s medical authority and public-facing representative. That position makes her appear to be the person in charge, but Netflix’s character description draws a distinction between her visible role and the hidden control of the facility.
How does Fairburn connect to the LOIS program?
According to Netflix’s character guide, Judi hired Fairburn to serve as Willow Hill’s public face. Judi is the mastermind behind the secret LOIS program, which carries on her father’s legacy of extracting outcast powers and redistributing them to normies. The reveal reframes Fairburn’s authority: she represents the institution, while Judi secretly directs its operation.

LOIS and the season’s outcast-health setting are fictional story elements, not descriptions of real psychiatric practice. The guide’s central contrast is between Fairburn’s public authority and Judi’s concealed control.
When was Newton announced as part of the cast?
Netflix included Newton in its May 7, 2024 cast reveal, published while Season 2 was in production. That establishes that she had been publicly listed by that date; it does not establish the date she was privately cast. Netflix’s later role-specific guide names her character as Dr. Rachael Fairburn.
