Haymitch Abernathy is the central returning character in Sunrise on the Reaping: Suzanne Collins’s novel tells the story of his participation in the Fiftieth Hunger Games, 24 years before The Hunger Games. The 2026 film adaptation is also reported to feature younger versions of familiar characters including President Snow, Effie Trinket, Caesar Flickerman, Plutarch Heavensbee, Beetee Latier, Wiress and Mags Flanagan.
Why Haymitch is at the center of the story
Sunrise on the Reaping begins on the morning of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The novel revisits the event that shaped Haymitch, then a District 12 tribute. Scholastic’s synopsis says the Quarter Quell will take twice as many tributes as usual; Haymitch is reaped alongside three other District 12 tributes. The novel was originally published on March 18, 2025. Scholastic’s book listing gives the premise and publication details.
Which familiar characters are reported in the film?
The film’s returning characters are younger portrayals, not the original movie performances transplanted into this earlier point in the story. TV Insider’s character guide, published April 13, 2026, maps the reported performers as follows:

These performer pairings are secondary-source reporting from TV Insider’s April 13, 2026 guide; they should not be confused with a studio-issued character list. In particular, speculation about Woody Harrelson returning as Haymitch should not be treated as confirmed casting: the guide identifies Joseph Zada for the younger role.

Are Katniss and Peeta in the film?
TV Insider’s guide also reports that Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson appear as Katniss and Peeta in the epilogue, attributing that detail to Deadline. The guide says they do not appear in the trailer. This is secondary reporting; the official studio and publisher material cited here does not independently confirm the epilogue casting.
When does the film come out?
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled for North American theaters on November 20, 2026. Lionsgate announced the date in its film announcement. Scholastic’s January 2026 release identifies Francis Lawrence as director and Billy Ray as screenplay adapter. Lionsgate’s initial June 2024 announcement said Lawrence was then in talks to direct; the later publisher release describes him as director.

How the book’s earlier story connects to the returning cast
The novel and film serve different purposes for readers and viewers: the book centers on Haymitch and the Fiftieth Hunger Games, while the film’s reported cast brings several people familiar from later points in Panem’s history into their younger years. That time shift explains why the movie’s performers differ from actors associated with the earlier released films.
Scholastic reported more than 1.5 million World English copies sold in the novel’s first week in 2025, including print, ebooks and audiobooks across the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It separately reported more than 1.2 million US copies during that week. In January 2026, Scholastic said sales since publication had exceeded 4.4 million World English copies, including more than 3.3 million in the US; those totals also cover print, ebooks and audiobooks in the six named markets.
