Lex Luthor’s tears in the Superman & Lois finale are meant to convey remorse, not proof that he has been redeemed. Co-showrunner Brent Fletcher says Lex regrets the pain he caused after letting hatred consume him. Clark’s forgiveness brings that regret into focus as Clark reflects on the meaning of his life.
Where the moment fits in the finale
The scene comes in “It Went By So Fast,” after the final battle with Lex and Doomsday. The episode then moves into a future-spanning coda about Clark and Lois’s life, family, deaths, and reunion. During his reflection, Clark names “Joy. Hope. Forgiveness. Friendship. Love.” TVLine’s account places Lex’s emotional reaction within that meditation on forgiveness; TheWrap also describes Clark forgiving Lex before Clark’s death.
Why Lex is crying
In a December 2, 2024 interview with TVLine, co-showrunner and executive producer Brent Fletcher explained Lex’s reaction through the contrast between the two characters: “Where Superman is hope, Lex was hate, and he let it consume him.” Fletcher added that Lex “wishes he hadn’t inflicted that pain on people.” The tears, then, register regret for the harm he caused and for the path he chose.
Does the scene mean Lex is redeemed?
No. The moment supports an interpretation of remorse, but it does not establish that Lex has repaired the damage he caused, changed his behavior, or become a different person. Fletcher’s comments explain the emotion in the scene; they do not describe a later reform. Clark’s forgiveness is an act of grace, not a declaration that Lex’s past actions no longer matter.

Why Clark’s forgiveness matters
The scene follows a final confrontation in which Clark is furious with Lex. Todd Helbing has described Clark as especially angry during that fight, giving the later moment a deliberate contrast: the story moves from confrontation to forgiveness rather than pretending the conflict never happened.
In a separate TheWrap interview, Fletcher described the ending’s focus as “family, hope and friends.” That emphasis connects Lex’s regret to the finale’s wider reflection on what people value, while keeping the distinction between acknowledging harm and erasing it.
