Spoilers for Episodes 5–7. Stranger Things Season 5, Volume 2 ends with the party preparing to stop Vecna, Max waking from her coma, and Holly still trapped in the Abyss. The biggest reveal is that the Upside Down is a wormhole connecting Hawkins to the Abyss—not the other world itself. Eleven appears to accept Kali’s proposal that they stay behind when the bridge is destroyed, leaving her fate unresolved at the end of Episode 7. Volume 2 has already been released; the series finale arrived separately.
When did Volume 2 come out?
Netflix released Volume 2 as Episodes 5–7, followed by Episode 8 as a separate series finale. Both batches were scheduled for 5 p.m. Pacific.
| Release batch | Episodes | Scheduled release |
|---|---|---|
| Volume 2 | 5–7 | Dec. 25, 2025, in the US; Dec. 26 in many other regions |
| Series finale | 8 | Dec. 31, 2025, in the US; Jan. 1, 2026, in many other regions |
Netflix Tudum’s release schedule gives those dates and regional distinctions. This explainer covers Volume 2 through Episode 7; it does not reveal what happens in Episode 8.
What happens at the end of Volume 2?
The group reaches the MAC-Z gate and prepares for its final confrontation with Vecna. The heroes have a plan to rescue the children he has taken and destroy the structure connecting their worlds, but they have not carried it out by the end of Episode 7. Holly is still in the Abyss, and Eleven’s apparent decision to remain behind with Kali leaves the volume on an uncertain cliffhanger.

What are the Upside Down and the Abyss?
Until this point, the characters have treated the Upside Down as the alternate world itself. At the end of Episode 5, Dustin revises that understanding: as described in Netflix Tudum’s official recap, he calls it a “wormhole”—a bridge between points in time and space that connects Hawkins to the Abyss.
The Abyss is the alien world Vecna wants to bring into Hawkins. The Upside Down is the bridge between them, formed after Eleven’s earlier contact with the Abyss. The distinction changes the goal of the fight: the characters need to stop Vecna’s attempt to merge the worlds and destroy the bridge that links them.

What is Vecna trying to do, and how will the party stop him?
Vecna’s plan
Vecna intends to merge Hawkins with the Abyss. He has gathered 12 children to serve as vessels and amplify his spell, using them in a way that recalls how he once acted through Will in Season 1. He tells the children that he is trying to save the world from a spreading darkness; the party recognizes him as the danger.
Operation Beanstalk
The crew’s counter-plan depends on the worlds drawing close enough for the Squawk radio tower to bridge the route to the Abyss. The planned roles are:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does anyone die in Volume 2?
No member of the party dies in Episodes 5–7, according to Netflix Tudum’s Volume 2 recap. Steve has a close call, but the whole party makes it through the volume alive. This answer applies only to Volume 2, not to the series as a whole.
Why is Eleven’s fate left uncertain?
Kali argues that destroying the lab alone will not stop the military from trying to exploit Eleven’s blood; another scientist could continue the program. She proposes that she and Eleven remain on the bridge when it collapses. At the end of Episode 7, Eleven appears to agree, but the episode does not confirm what she will ultimately do.
Ross Duffer described the mood as “a sense of dread or uncertainty that pervades” at the end of Episode 7, and said the moment leaves “a big question mark” about Eleven’s fate. That question belongs to the Volume 2 cliffhanger; the separately released Episode 8 is the series finale.
