The first finished USS Enterprise model made for Star Trek: The Original Series was reported returned to Gene Roddenberry’s son, Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, after decades out of sight. A 2024 report said it had resurfaced after being found in a storage locker and was being returned rather than sold at auction. Restoration and public display were plans at the time—not confirmed outcomes.
What happened to the original Enterprise model?
The roughly three-foot model was used for the original pilot, “The Cage,” later incorporated into the two-part episode “The Menagerie,” and for Enterprise shots in the series’ opening credits. After the original series ended in 1969, Gene Roddenberry received it. In 1979, he loaned it to the makers of Star Trek: The Motion Picture; the model disappeared shortly afterward, according to the April 18, 2024 report, which republished a Collider article drawing on ABC News.
Where was it found, and how did it return?
The report said an unidentified party found the model in a storage locker and that it appeared on eBay in 2023. The finders contacted Heritage Auctions, and an arrangement was made to return it to Rod Roddenberry instead of selling it at auction. The account does not say the model was auctioned.
Is this the Enterprise model at the Smithsonian?
No. The recovered miniature and the Smithsonian’s Enterprise model are distinct objects. The recovered piece is described as the first finished model, used for “The Cage” and the opening credits. A larger model was made later for the rest of the series; the 2024 report says that later model is displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

Will the recovered model go on public display?
Rod Roddenberry said the family intended to restore the miniature and hoped to make it accessible to the public, possibly at a museum. In the report, he said: “This is not going home to adorn my shelves. This is going to get restored and we’re working on ways to get it out so the public can see it and my hope is that it will land in a museum somewhere.” Those were intentions expressed in 2024; the report does not establish that restoration was completed or that the model has since gone on display.
