Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is a character-led horror series about the week before a wedding, when one bride’s doubts begin to feel like something more than nerves. It favors creeping dread and relationship anxiety over frequent jump scares. Whether its eight-episode mystery earns its eventual payoff is the point on which critics disagree.
What is Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen about?
Created and showrun by Haley Z. Boston, the Netflix series follows Rachel and her fiancé, Nicky, as they travel to his family’s secluded vacation home in a snowy forest in the week before their wedding. Rachel is increasingly anxious about whether she is marrying the right person, and the family gathering gives that uncertainty room to grow. Netflix’s official synopsis frames the story around the question of what makes two people soulmates.
The premise is not a conventional slasher setup. Its tension comes from an impending wedding, strained relationships, unsettling events and the possibility that Rachel’s foreboding means more than ordinary pre-wedding nerves. This review avoids later revelations about what is happening or why.
What kind of horror is it?
Boston describes the intended tone as unsettling dread rather than jump scares. In Netflix Tudum’s interview, she says, “The overall tone lives in this unsettling, ‘getting under your skin,’ dread territory rather than jump scares.” She also describes a character-first approach, mixing dialogue and humor with horror.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That makes the series a better fit for viewers who enjoy mood, paranoia and gradual revelations than for anyone seeking a fast-moving sequence of scares. The wedding-week setting gives the show an intimate pressure cooker: Rachel’s private doubts and the family’s tensions matter as much as the mystery surrounding the ominous events.
How are the cast and performances?
Camila Morrone plays Rachel, with Adam DiMarco as Nicky. The ensemble includes Jennifer Jason Leigh and Ted Levine, alongside Gus Birney, Jeff Wilbusch, Karla Crome, Sawyer Fraser and Zlatko Burić, according to Netflix Tudum.

Morrone’s performance is a particular strength in Ashley Hurst’s What’s On Netflix review, which praises her emotional range as Rachel. Nick Schager’s Daily Beast review likewise finds the performances effective, even as it takes issue with the series’ growing ominousness.
Does the mystery pay off?
That depends on how much patience you have for a prolonged build-up—and how much resolution you expect in return. What’s On Netflix praised the foreboding atmosphere and gave the series 4/5. TechRadar’s review is more favorable to viewers who enjoy slow-burn dread, while warning that those wanting a brisk pace and lots of scares may be disappointed. The Daily Beast’s Schager praised the mood, score and performances but judged the extended mystery and its explanations underwhelming.

Those are individual critics’ responses, not a settled verdict. The split points to the real trade-off: the show spends time sustaining uncertainty, and that strategy works best if the atmosphere and character drama hold your attention even when answers are delayed. If you need each episode to move quickly toward a clear explanation, the wait may feel longer than the payoff warrants.
Who should watch it?
- Try it if: you like psychological horror, slow-building unease and performances anchored in relationship tension.
- Go in cautiously if: you want a high scare count, fast pacing or a mystery that resolves quickly and decisively.
Boston created the series and serves as showrunner and executive producer. Netflix’s announcement names the Duffer Brothers and Hilary Leavitt as executive producers for Upside Down Pictures, with Andrea Sperling also executive producing. Netflix Tudum reports that filming took place in Toronto.
