The stage show centers on the making of Bombshell, the fictional Marilyn Monroe musical from the series—not a straightforward staging of Bombshell itself.

What is the stage musical about?
SMASH is a backstage musical comedy inspired by the NBC series created by Theresa Rebeck. It follows the making of Bombshell, the fictional musical about Marilyn Monroe at the heart of the TV story. That distinction matters: the Broadway adaptation is about creating the show within the show, rather than simply transferring Bombshell to the stage.

Concord Theatricals announced exclusive worldwide stage licensing rights for SMASH in a June 1, 2026 announcement. That points to a life for the stage musical beyond its Broadway engagement, but does not by itself establish when or where a particular production will happen. A school, theatre, or producer should contact Concord Theatricals to confirm licensing availability, territory, and terms for a specific production. Consumer access to the cast recording is separate from permission to perform the musical.
