Why is his age reported as both 74 and 75?
D’Amato was 74 when he died. The Television Academy records his birthday as October 2, 1949, and his date of passing as February 19, 2024—before his 75th birthday. A Worcester Telegram & Gazette obituary republished by Yahoo used “dies at 75” in its headline, but the recorded dates establish his age as 74. How did hockey shape his role in the film?
Slap Shot portrayed a gritty, comic minor-league hockey team. NHL Public Relations’ 2017 retrospective connects the film’s story to the Johnstown Jets and former player Ned Dowd; Dowd’s sister, Nancy Dowd, wrote the screenplay. The retrospective also notes that real hockey players were cast as the Hanson Brothers after producers struggled to find actors who could convincingly play hockey. D’Amato had played hockey at Emerson College. In the obituary report, he recalled seeing the other auditioning actors on the ice and realizing that his skating gave him an advantage. That is his reported recollection, rather than independent documentation of the casting process.
What else did Paul D’Amato act in?
His credits extended beyond the hockey comedy. The Television Academy lists the films The Deer Hunter, Firepower and Suspect, along with appearances in Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, The Unusuals and American Playbook.
