The Unknown—a masked chocolate-maker villain said to live inside the factory walls—was not a Roald Dahl character. It was invented for Glasgow’s disastrous February 2024 “Willy’s Chocolate Experience.” But its grotesque, uncanny premise had the dark whimsy many readers associate with Dahl, making the figure the fiasco’s most Dahl-like idea by accident.
Who was The Unknown?
The Unknown was a masked antagonist in the script for “Willy’s Chocolate Experience,” an event staged in Glasgow in February 2024. Actor Paul Connell, who played Willy Wonka, described the script as AI-generated, The Guardian reported on March 5, 2024. In that script, The Unknown was an evil chocolate maker living in the factory walls.
The character became one of the most striking images associated with the event after its disastrous opening went viral. The event’s promotional advertisement was also AI-generated, according to The Guardian. That reporting does not establish who devised The Unknown, whether an AI system generated the character concept, or precisely how the script was produced.
Was The Unknown a Roald Dahl character?
No. The Unknown was created for the Glasgow event and does not appear in Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Reports about the proposed horror film likewise describe the figure as a product of the event, not a character from Dahl’s story (STV News, March 2024).

Calling The Unknown “the most Roald Dahl part” of the fiasco is an interpretation, not a claim about Dahl’s authorship or intent. A sinister candy-maker lurking in the walls combines chocolate-factory fantasy with something grotesque and unsettling—a tonal collision that can feel Dahlian. The resemblance is in the mood; the character itself was not Dahl’s.
Who played The Unknown?
Felicia Dawkins played the masked figure. ITV News reported on March 14, 2024, that she was 16 at the time. After the role attracted online attention, the London Dungeon offered her training with its performance team and a guest appearance, ITV News reported. That opportunity was a later development for Dawkins, not evidence that the Glasgow event itself was a professional success.
