In “Shadow and Flame,” the siege of Eregion ends in devastation, Celebrimbor dies without revealing where Sauron’s Nine rings are, and Galadriel survives their final confrontation. The Stranger’s identity is also settled: he is Gandalf. Sauron, however, remains free to pursue his designs.
What happens in “Shadow and Flame”?
Episode 8, “Shadow and Flame,” is the Season 2 finale. Prime Video lists its runtime as 1 hour 13 minutes and labels it the season finale. The episode brings the siege of Eregion to a close, but not the wider conflict with Sauron.
As Eregion falls, Galadriel leads surviving elves to safety. Sauron is still searching for the Nine rings, and his pursuit turns on Celebrimbor, the elven smith who made them.
Why does Sauron kill Celebrimbor?
Sauron tortures Celebrimbor to learn where the Nine are hidden. Celebrimbor refuses to tell him, even as the siege and Sauron’s violence close in. He is killed without giving up their location.

TV Insider reports that Galadriel has the rings. That means Sauron kills the one person who might have helped him find them, but the rings remain beyond his reach until he takes them from her later in the episode.
The exchange is also a personal rupture. Charlie Vickers, who plays Sauron, described his character’s response as a loss of control: “He loses control, which is not Sauron. He loses his inhibitions.” That is Vickers’s interpretation of the scene, not a separate declaration of canon. TV Insider’s finale interview discusses the moment and Celebrimbor’s refusal.
How does the fight between Galadriel and Sauron end?
Adar’s attempt to join forces against Sauron collapses when Sauron arrives with the orcs and kills him. Galadriel then confronts Sauron. Their clash is both a contest over the rings and a struggle over whether she will accept his offer to join him again. She refuses.
Sauron uses changing appearances and illusions during the confrontation. He wounds Galadriel with his crown and takes the Nine. When he demands her ring, she leaps from a cliff rather than surrender it.

Who is the Stranger?
The finale explicitly reveals that the Stranger is Gandalf. The answer resolves the season’s identity mystery, even as the larger political and military conflicts remain unsettled.

What remains unresolved?
Sauron has lost Celebrimbor but not his ambition. He now has the Nine, while Galadriel and the surviving elves face the consequences of Eregion’s fall. The Stranger’s identity is no longer a question, but the finale leaves Sauron’s next move—and the shape of the resistance to him—open.
