Champlin also spoke about Hargitay’s wider role in the production, noting that she directs and executive produces as well as leads the series. Her comments describe one guest actor’s experience; they should not be read as a universal account of how every cast or crew member has worked with Hargitay.
How did Hargitay help with a challenging scene?
Champlin recalled preparing for a hospital-room scene involving a rape kit. Before the scene, Hargitay gave her background about what was happening so she could understand the immediate circumstances her character was facing. Champlin presented that exchange as an example of Hargitay’s guidance in that moment, not as a general account of how every scene or production is handled.

In the interview, Champlin summed up her impression of Hargitay by saying, “I feel like she takes care of everyone there.” She also said, “I feel like, as an actor, she brought out a lot of the best in me, which I’m grateful for.” Both statements are Champlin’s personal assessment of her colleague, rather than an official statement by Hargitay or testimony representing the whole SVU team.
