Saw XI was pulled from Lionsgate’s release calendar in March 2025, but the studio did not announce that the film could never be made. Writer Patrick Melton had already said the project had stopped moving after a spring 2024 script submission; months later, producer Oren Koules described a disagreement with fellow producer Mark Burg over how to execute it. The comments explain why the announced version stalled, while leaving its longer-term fate unresolved.
What happened to Saw XI?
The clearest public development was a scheduling change, not a formal declaration that the franchise’s next film was permanently canceled. On March 24, 2025, TheWrap reported that Lionsgate had removed Saw XI from its release slate and placed The Strangers — Chapter 2 in the September 26, 2025 slot previously associated with the Saw sequel.
TheWrap also reported a Lionsgate statement delivered in the voice of Billy the Puppet: “I’ve seen the rumors. They say it’s Game Over. You all should know me better than that. The game is never over.” That promotional tease was not a confirmation that production was continuing, nor an announcement that the movie was permanently dead.
What did the writers say about the delay?
Patrick Melton said the submitted script went nowhere
In comments reported by The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Patrick Melton said he and co-writer Marcus Dunstan submitted a draft in spring 2024 and had heard nothing since May. He characterized the obstacle as a dispute involving the producers and Lionsgate, rather than a problem with the writing. That is Melton’s account of the stalled development, not a formal studio explanation.

Melton also said the story had timely social commentary and compared its themes to Saw VI. ComicBook.com’s account described the intended direction as carrying forward John Kramer’s targeting of scammers and health insurance providers. These remarks concern the proposed script; they do not establish the plot of a finished or currently approved film.
What explanation did producer Oren Koules give?
In an August 2025 interview with Fangoria, producer Oren Koules said he and Mark Burg could not agree on the film’s execution. He said Kevin Greutert was set to direct and Dunstan and Melton had written what he called a great script. Koules described it as taking place “about 30 seconds after Saw X,” presenting the planned movie as a near-immediate continuation.

Koules’s explanation and Melton’s earlier comments overlap on the central point—that the project stalled amid disagreements—but emphasize different parties. Melton described a dispute involving producers and Lionsgate; Koules later identified a disagreement between himself and Burg over execution. Neither account amounts to a public Lionsgate finding that the film was permanently canceled.

Koules said the Saw rights and library, including the ten previous films and associated ancillary rights, had been sold to Blumhouse. He said the planned script was included in that deal, and that he had deliberately not asked Jason Blum what he intended to do in case Blum chose to make it. That leaves open the possibility of the script being used, but it is not confirmation of a new production, release date, or current plan.

The available statements establish that the version announced with Greutert directing and Dunstan and Melton writing was stalled and removed from the schedule. They do not establish whether the script has since been revived, revised, or abandoned; Koules’s possibility is not a greenlight.
