Jost focused on the image’s timing after Pope Francis’s funeral; Che delivered a sexual double entendre about Musk. The jokes were satire, not a detailed account of Musk’s formal status.
What did SNL say about Trump’s AI pope photo?
Jost opened with Trump’s image, which showed the president dressed as pope. As reported by The Daily Beast on May 4, 2025, Jost said the image was “Apparently ordering a one-way ticket to hell.” He then tied the joke to Trump’s attendance at Pope Francis’s funeral: “Trump was at the Pope’s funeral. That means he walked past an open casket and was like, ‘Oh, we should do a Who Wore It Best.’”
The punchline hinged on the contrast between a solemn funeral and a self-portrayal in papal dress. It mocked the image’s timing and appearance rather than offering evidence about how it was made or who created it.
What was the Elon Musk DOGE joke on Weekend Update?
Che followed the item about Musk reportedly stepping back from DOGE with the line, “As always, Elon pulled out a little too late.” Mashable’s May 4, 2025 recap reported the joke. Its sexual double meaning is the punchline; it should not be read as a precise statement about Musk’s employment, appointment, or legal status.

In reporting published May 5, 2025, Reuters, hosted by Investing.com, said Trump characterized the image as a joke and said, “I had nothing to do with it. It was just, somebody did it in fun. It’s fine. Have to have a little fun don’t you?” Reuters also reported that the White House reposted the image and that Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, said, “It wasn’t good.”

Reuters also quoted John Wihbey, director of Northeastern University’s AI-Media Strategies Lab, describing what he viewed as a broader development: “I think we are seeing a new phenomenon – the merging of social media and AI power, organized for political power and narrative dominance.” That is Wihbey’s analysis of a wider pattern, not an established finding about the intent behind this particular image.
