The cast’s praise of Donald Trump was sarcastic: the sketch imagined performers scrambling to flatter the incoming president. Its closing Trump-character line, delivered by James Austin Johnson, was, “We love you, buddy!”
What was the SNL sketch about?
The cold open played on the premise that the cast wanted to get on Trump’s good side after his election victory. In a November 10, 2024 report, Yahoo Entertainment’s William Vaillancourt described the sequence as a sarcastic performance of loyalty, not a sincere endorsement. The broader joke drew on Trump’s threats of revenge against perceived enemies; the report does not establish that he had specifically threatened SNL or any performer.
How did the cast pretend to support Trump?
Several performers made increasingly extravagant claims of allegiance. Kenan Thompson said they had been with Trump all along, while Marcello Hernandez claimed everyone on stage had voted for him. Heidi Gardner joked that she had voted for him “50 times in Pennsylvania.”
Colin Jost, in his Weekend Update character, offered mock praise and blamed Michael Che for making Trump look foolish. Sarah Sherman suggested the show should change its portrayal of Trump to a “hot, jacked Trump.”

What happened in the closing sequence?
James Austin Johnson appeared as Trump wearing a muscle suit, tank top and red headband. His character promised a flattering portrayal, called Trump his hero, and said: “And he’s going to make an incredible president, and eventually, king. We love you, buddy!” Johnson’s character blew a kiss and subtly rolled his eyes as he left the stage, according to Vaillancourt’s report.
Dana Carvey then appeared as an exaggerated Elon Musk and interrupted with: “But seriously—I run the country now.”

Why does the headline say “We’ve Always Loved You”?
The headline summarizes the sketch’s broader joke: the performers act as though they had supported Trump all along. The reported closing line is slightly different—Johnson’s Trump character says, “We love you, buddy!” These are scripted lines from the sketch, not statements by Trump or genuine declarations of support from the cast.
