Rust is a Western about a boy sentenced to hang after accidentally killing a rancher and the estranged grandfather who helps him flee. The film can be read as a familiar pursuit story, but its fictional killing is difficult to separate from the fatal shooting that occurred during production. The Associated Press called it “a serviceable Western”; that is the reviewer’s assessment, not a claim of critical consensus.
What is Rust about?
Set in 1880s Wyoming, the film follows 13-year-old Lucas Hollister after he accidentally kills a rancher. Sentenced to hang, Lucas escapes with his estranged grandfather, Harland Rust, played by Alec Baldwin. Their flight gives the story its central relationship: a boy and a grandfather who must confront their distance while being pursued.
That setup is recognizable Western territory. The more unsettling echo is that the story’s accidental killing meets a film whose own production was marked by a real fatal shooting. That parallel shapes how the finished work lands, but it does not establish that the screenplay was conceived as a retelling of the production tragedy.
How does the film work as a Western?
The Associated Press review describes Rust as “a serviceable Western” and says its tragic offscreen history haunts the film. “Serviceable” is the AP reviewer’s judgment: a concise description of a film that works within familiar Western conventions, rather than evidence of universal agreement about its quality.

The grandfather-grandson relationship offers the story an emotional center beyond the escape and pursuit. Yet a viewer cannot easily watch the fictional danger as though it were sealed off from the real circumstances in which the movie was made. That is a critical response to the film’s context, not a measure of its craft that can be stated as fact.
How did Halyna Hutchins’s death shape the finished film?
On October 21, 2021, a live round discharged from a prop gun on the New Mexico set, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. Production later resumed in Montana. Bianca Cline completed the cinematography after Hutchins’s death; reporting says Hutchins had filmed more than half the movie and that Cline studied Hutchins’s notes while seeking to preserve the established visual approach.

The finished film therefore carries two distinct visual contributions: Hutchins’s work on more than half of it, and Cline’s completion of the cinematography. The production history changes the way the images may be received, but it should not be reduced to a simple claim that the tragedy either defines or invalidates the film.
The AP review reports that the film closes with a dedication to Hutchins and includes her question, “What can we do to make this better?” The question connects the finished work to her craft while leaving the circumstances of her death impossible to smooth over.

The production shooting is essential context for a review, but it is not a substitute for a comprehensive account of responsibility or the legal aftermath. A judge dismissed the criminal case against Baldwin in July 2024; that procedural development does not resolve every civil matter or public dispute associated with the production. The film can be considered as a Western while acknowledging that its making and release cannot be discussed without the loss of Hutchins and the injury to Souza.
