The film’s most daring creative decision is, arguably, to keep Rocky a faceless, rocklike alien—and make him a character Ryan Gosling could perform opposite, not just a digital image added later. That choice makes the Grace–Rocky relationship harder to stage, but it also gives the story its defining emotional and visual problem to solve.
Why keeping Rocky alien was the risk
Rocky has no eyes, mouth, or familiar face to signal what he feels. In a live-action film, that makes him difficult to read and potentially difficult to love. The directors could have made him more conventionally friendly, but Chris Miller said they chose to stay faithful to Andy Weir’s original design. He described the challenge to the Directors Guild of America as making “a rock crab thing with no face and no eyes and no mouth” so expressive that viewers might say, “I would die for that rock!” (DGA interview; Hayakawa Books & Magazines interview).
That tension is the point: Rocky needs to remain unmistakably nonhuman while still becoming a compelling companion. Giving him ordinary facial cues might make the task easier, but would change the quality of the relationship the story asks the audience to accept.
Rocky had to be a scene partner
Directors Phil Lord and Miller have described the film as built around the relationship between Grace and Rocky. They said Gosling needed someone to act with, and Rocky was treated as second on the call sheet. Puppeteers operated the character on set, giving Gosling a physical presence to respond to during scenes rather than requiring him to imagine every interaction with an empty space. Lord told the BFI that the production wanted Gosling to have a scene partner; the DGA interview likewise describes Rocky as a practical performance presence (BFI interview; DGA interview).

This is not merely a behind-the-scenes convenience. A responsive partner can shape timing, attention, and physical behavior in a performance. The puppet gave Gosling something tangible to play against, while the finished film could use whichever technique best served each shot.
Practical craft and digital effects work together
Lord and Miller ruled out a CGI-only Rocky from the start, but that does not mean the character is “all practical” or that the film avoids CGI. The directors described most of Rocky’s performance as puppets and animatronics, with digital work used where needed. The DGA account also describes a hybrid design process involving clay sculpting, digital sculpting in ZBrush, and painters refining the character. For close-ups, the production could choose puppet or CG work according to the expression a particular shot required (Hayakawa Books & Magazines interview; DGA interview).

The distinction matters: practical performance and digital image-making are not competing explanations for Rocky. The puppet establishes a physical presence and gives the actors a partner; digital tools let the filmmakers shape the image when a shot calls for something the on-set puppet cannot provide.
His voice makes alien communication legible
Rocky’s communication is not ordinary speech. Sound designers Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn developed the film’s nonverbal language over months. Aadahl told The Credits that the language contains 250 words and concepts. That sound design gives the audience another way into a character whose face cannot do the usual expressive work (The Credits interview).

The language and the physical design solve related problems: how to make an unfamiliar being understandable without making him familiar in every respect. Rocky’s presence, movement, and sounds can carry meaning without turning him into a human-shaped character.

Rocky’s design is part of a larger effort to translate the novel’s unusual structure and surprises rather than flatten them. The BFI interview says the film retains the flashback structure, major surprises, and ending while compressing a long story for cinema. Screenwriter Drew Goddard has said the team deliberately protected the backward unfolding of Grace’s character arc and the major reveals (BFI interview; The Credits interview).

Preserving Rocky’s alienness follows the same logic. The adaptation does not remove a demanding element simply because it is difficult to stage; it builds a filmmaking approach around what makes the relationship distinctive. The result is a character presented through practical performance, visual effects, sound, and Gosling’s interaction with him—not through a face designed to make the audience’s response automatic.
