Practical Magic 2 is already in theaters. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are confirmed to return as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, replacing the “in talks” status reported when the sequel was first announced in 2024. The official film site lists an international release beginning September 9, 2026, and a North American release on September 10, 2026.
Is Practical Magic 2 happening, and are Bullock and Kidman returning?
Yes. Warner Bros.’ official film site identifies Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as stars and producers. They reprise their roles as the Owens sisters, Sally and Gillian. The June 2024 report that the two were negotiating to return described the project at an earlier stage; the studio’s current film materials confirm their involvement.
The sequel arrives 28 years after the original Practical Magic, released in 1998. In a 2026 Associated Press interview, Bullock reflected on the first film’s reception: “We were not well-received because we were ‘too much,’ ‘too witchy,’ ‘too many women,’ ‘too many tones.’” She later described its reappraisal as arriving “28 and change years too early.” The AP interview places the new film in the context of the original’s later rediscovery.
When did Practical Magic 2 come out?
The official site lists the international release as beginning September 9, 2026, and the North American release as September 10, 2026. The film is presented as a theatrical release; actual opening dates and showtimes can vary by territory, so check local theater listings.

Is Practical Magic 2 based on The Book of Magic?
Yes. The official site names Alice Hoffman’s The Book of Magic as the screenplay’s source. Published in 2021, the novel expands the Owens family story; the Associated Press describes it as the book that inspired the sequel. The novel and the film are related, but they are different works: the book is not simply another version of the movie.
Should you watch or read anything before seeing the sequel?
The original 1998 film is the direct screen introduction to Sally and Gillian’s story, making it the most straightforward choice if you want to revisit the characters before the sequel. The Book of Magic offers a separate way into the family’s story and is the novel named as the screenplay’s basis. Neither option should be treated as a substitute for the other, and the available official information does not establish that reading the novel is required to follow the film.
