Carol tests the Others’ honesty
After the grenade incident, Carol returns home to find the damage repaired. She had consented to the work while in the ambulance, a small but consequential detail as she tries to understand how much control she still has over events around her.
She begins cataloguing what she knows about the Others and asks Larry about her novels. Their lavish praise makes her suspicious: are they offering honest opinions, or telling her what she wants to hear? Carol puts that question to a test and learns that Helen did not particularly like her writing. The revelation suggests the Others can share an unwelcome truth, even when their usual manner is soothing and flattering.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That answer does not resolve the larger question of whether the Others can be trusted. It does, however, give Carol one concrete piece of evidence to work with as she investigates the Joining.
Can the Joining be reversed?
Carol visits Zosia in the hospital and asks whether the Joining can be undone. Zosia does not give her a direct answer, leaving Carol without the certainty she wants. Instead of accepting that uncertainty, Carol steals sodium thiopental from the hospital pharmacy and first tests it on herself while recording what happens.

She then uses the drug on Zosia, apparently hoping to force a clearer response. The scene turns sharply: Zosia loses mental clarity and collapses into cardiac arrest. The Others plead with Carol and try to resuscitate her as the episode ends. Zosia’s condition beyond that cliffhanger is not resolved in this episode.
Why Carol’s decision changes the episode
Carol’s aim is to learn whether people can be freed from the Joining, a question tied to autonomy and the possibility of restoring human life as it was. But her method puts Zosia’s immediate safety at risk. The episode refuses to make that choice feel clean: Carol is pursuing information that could matter enormously, while causing visible harm to someone she wants answers from.

The Others’ distress in the closing moments complicates the scene further. Their pleas are plainly visible, but the episode does not establish what those reactions mean about their motives. The emotional force comes from the tension itself: Carol treats them as a system to investigate, while they respond to Zosia’s crisis as people trying to save her.
Manousos opens a second front of resistance
Alongside Carol’s investigation in Albuquerque, the episode opens with Manousos Oviedo in Paraguay. He analyzes radio frequencies and refuses food brought by the Others. His isolation and practical resistance offer a contrast to Carol’s more direct attempts to question and probe them.

Neither approach supplies a solution here, but the contrast makes clear that resistance can take more than one form.
