The phrase “flagrantly unfunny” is the verdict in the headline of a sharply negative review of Running Point—not a consensus among critics. Netflix’s basketball comedy has also drawn a favorable assessment, with TIME critic Judy Berman praising its ensemble and developing character relationships. Whether the show works for you comes down to its jokes, cast chemistry and familiar mix of family-business drama and sports comedy.
What is Running Point about?
Kate Hudson plays Isla Gordon, who unexpectedly takes charge of her family’s professional basketball team, the fictional Los Angeles Waves. The series combines sibling rivalry and workplace comedy with stories from the basketball world. Netflix describes its first season as 10 episodes, and its official title page lists two seasons. The listing and availability may vary by region; see Netflix’s title page.
The show fictionalizes aspects of Lakers president and co-owner Jeanie Buss’s story. Buss is an executive producer, as is Linda Rambis, the Lakers’ manager of special projects. The Waves are fictional: Running Point is not a documentary account of the Lakers. Netflix Tudum discusses the series and its background in its series guide.
Why does the review call it “flagrantly unfunny”?
The Yahoo-hosted review’s headline delivers that categorical judgment. The available search excerpt says some comic choices feel stale, while crediting the cast, including guest performers, with keeping the show from total failure. The review page could not be independently accessed, so that is the extent of the argument that can be responsibly attributed to it: the headline’s strong verdict and the excerpt’s criticism of the humor, tempered by praise for performers.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters because “unfunny” is a response to execution, not a verifiable fact about the series. A joke that feels recycled to one viewer may land differently for another, and a lively performance can make familiar material more enjoyable without making its premise especially original.
Is Running Point funny? A favorable counterpoint
TIME TV critic Judy Berman’s February 27, 2025 review offers a substantially more positive reading. She praised the ensemble, the show’s ability to keep damaged characters within a lighthearted tone, and relationships that develop over time. Rather than treating the series as a run of punchlines, her case rests partly on whether viewers grow invested in the people delivering them.

Berman compared the premise with Succession and Ted Lasso, but argued that Running Point has a different register. As she put it, “Running Point is neither constrained (like Lasso) nor elevated (like Succession) by a guiding philosophy about wealth or masculinity or human nature.” Read her full assessment at TIME.
What to expect from the comedy and cast
The premise puts Isla between two comic engines: the pressures of running a professional team and the complications of managing a family business. That gives the show room for sports workplace situations and sibling friction, but it also means viewers are entering territory familiar from other workplace, family and sports comedies. The practical question is whether the writing and performances make those situations feel fresh.

Kate Hudson leads a cast that the negative review excerpt itself identifies as a strength. Netflix producer Mindy Kaling has described her interest in stories about ambitious women, including a basketball-team president; Netflix Tudum quotes her saying, “I really love writing shows about ambitious women.” That intention helps explain Isla’s central role, but it does not settle whether the jokes or character arcs succeed for a particular viewer.

If you want a comedy led by a capable ensemble and are open to a lighthearted family-and-sports workplace story, the favorable TIME review suggests there is more to enjoy than the premise alone. If stale jokes are a deal-breaker, the Yahoo review’s headline and excerpt capture the risk: the comedy may not feel distinctive enough to overcome familiar setups. The difference between those responses is less about the series’ subject than about how much you value chemistry and character development alongside joke-by-joke originality.
