The cold open gathers familiar hosts around Short. Tom Hanks leads the setup, joking that the club began as “an ingeniously lazy way to avoid writing a monologue.” Short arrives with the line, “What a surprise I’ve known about all week!” Jimmy Fallon then presents the ceremonial jacket, described in the sketch as “a women’s small.” The garment’s poor fit gives Short room for the physical-comedy finish. These lines and details belong to the sketch, not to a factual account of the club’s origin. TVLine’s recap recounts the sequence.
What else happened in the Christmas episode?
Short’s song-driven monologue
Short’s monologue leans into music and performance rather than treating the hosting milestone as the episode’s only event. The format suits a host whose comedy can move between character work, songs, and physical gags. The Los Angeles Times recap also notes the monologue as one of the episode’s highlights.

An airport Christmas special
Bowen Yang and Ego Nwodim return as TSA agents Umberto and Chartreuse Hamilton in an airport-themed holiday sketch. Their recurring characters give the episode a familiar comic thread alongside the Five-Timers reunion. The Los Angeles Times describes the sketch.
Hozier’s performances
Hozier served as musical guest and performed twice, according to Boston.com’s episode recap.

Do the cameos help or crowd out Short?
The Five-Timers Club cold open is built around returning hosts, so cameos are the premise rather than a detour. The Guardian describes the episode as cameo-filled and entertaining, while The A.V. Club’s review sees it as a Christmas homecoming but observes that guest appearances can sometimes take attention from the nominal host. That tension is most useful as a way to read the episode: the reunion gives Short’s milestone a celebratory frame, while the monologue and his physical work with the jacket put his own performance back in focus. The airport sketch supplies another returning-character beat, so the holiday atmosphere comes from both the guests and familiar cast pairings.
