Rooster is a warm, relationship-centered college comedy led by Steve Carell, though its first season is still finding its feet. Its strongest appeal is less a nonstop stream of jokes than the kindness at the heart of its father-daughter story.
What is Rooster about?
Set at Ludlow College, the HBO comedy follows Greg Russo (Steve Carell), a successful author known for beach reads. His fictional hero is Rooster; Greg’s real-life challenge is his complicated relationship with his daughter, Katie (Charly Clive), a professor at the small liberal-arts college.

After Katie goes through a humiliating breakup, Greg takes a job at Ludlow so he can stay close to her. The setup puts their family relationship at the center of a campus comedy, with the college providing the setting for its wider mix of people and connections. HBO’s announcement described the series as a comedy about an author’s complicated relationship with his daughter; the Associated Press supplies the character and breakup details.
Is Rooster a feel-good comedy?
That is a fair description, with the qualification that “feel-good” does not mean every joke lands or every viewer will share the show’s sensibility. Los Angeles Times critic Robert Lloyd describes a gentle comedy in which kindness largely rules at Ludlow. The emphasis falls on relationships and people treating one another well, more than on romance. He also notes Gen X nostalgia and an 1980s college-radio soundtrack.

TV Guide critic Keith Phipps likewise finds the series generous toward its characters and praises the pairing of Carell and Clive. But his March 5, 2026 review calls it a “Charming Work in Progress”: in the six episodes critics had seen, the show still seemed to be finding its feet. The early reviews therefore point to warmth and likable performances, alongside a premise that may feel familiar or not yet fully developed.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes the show as kind-spirited and praises Carell’s performance and Danielle Deadwyler’s support. That is the aggregator’s summary, not a promise of universal agreement. At the October 7, 2026 access snapshot, Rotten Tomatoes listed an 88% Tomatometer from 57 reviews and a 76% Popcornmeter from 500-plus ratings. Those are changing aggregator figures, not fixed measures of quality.

Who made Rooster, and who is in it?
Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses created the series. Carell stars as Greg, with Clive as Katie; Danielle Deadwyler and Phil Dunster are also among the cast named in HBO’s announcement. The Associated Press reported that Lawrence was delighted by Carell’s improvisation, saying, “I could have watched it for two hours.” That remark captures the value the creators place on Carell’s comic presence, though the father-daughter relationship gives the show its emotional center.
Is Rooster worth watching?
Try it if you want a gentler comedy built around family tension, character chemistry, and people trying to care for one another. Carell and Clive’s pairing is a particular strength in the reviews, and the college setting allows the story to reach beyond the central relationship. If you want a fully polished premise or consistently high joke density, the work-in-progress caveat matters: critics reviewing six available episodes found the show charming, but still developing.
