On December 7, 2024, Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update addressed two stories in the same segment: the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son, Hunter Biden. The episode aired while the investigation into Thompson’s death was still unfolding.
Which SNL episode featured the segment?
The segment aired in the Paul Mescal-hosted Saturday Night Live episode on December 7, 2024, listed by NBC as Season 50, Episode 8. NBC’s episode listing is the official reference for the broadcast and show information.
A contemporary Guardian recap describes Weekend Update’s treatment of both news stories. It is a recap, not an official transcript, so its reproductions of the jokes should be attributed to that account.
What did Weekend Update say about the CEO killing?
Brian Thompson, chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, was killed in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, 2024. Three days later, with the investigation ongoing, Colin Jost used Weekend Update to joke about the sharply divided public reaction to the killing. The Guardian quoted him saying it “really says something about America that a guy was murdered in cold blood and the two reactions were ‘Yeah, well healthcare stinks,’ and ‘girl, that shooter hot!’”
The phrase “CEO assassin” in the segment’s topical framing referred to the person accused in Thompson’s killing; it was not a legal finding at the time of the broadcast. Federal charges against Luigi Mangione were announced on December 19, 2024, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. A later DOJ release dated August 14, 2026, reported that Mangione had pleaded guilty in connection with the murder. That later development was not information available to the December 7 broadcast.
What was the joke about Hunter Biden’s pardon?
President Joseph R. Biden signed a full and unconditional pardon for Robert Hunter Biden on December 1, 2024. Michael Che’s Weekend Update joke about the pardon was reported by the Guardian as: “Hunter celebrated his pardon by celebrating waaaaay less than he used to.” That line is satire, not a factual account of the pardon’s legal terms.

The pardon covered federal offenses Hunter Biden committed or may have committed from January 1, 2014, through December 1, 2024, including the named federal cases prosecuted by Special Counsel David C. Weiss. The pardon warrant sets out its terms. A December 3 court order excerpt later clarified that the date range should be read as covering conduct through execution of the warrant on December 1, rather than conduct after that date; the order is reproduced in the DOJ-hosted Special Counsel report.

Weekend Update put the stories side by side during a fast-moving week: the pardon had been signed on December 1, Thompson was killed on December 4, and the episode aired on December 7. The federal charging announcement in Thompson’s case came later, on December 19. The reported guilty plea came much later, in August 2026. Keeping those dates separate matters: later legal outcomes should not be read back into jokes written and broadcast before those developments.
