Johnny Depp worked with an unnamed French-language coach to prepare his pronunciation for playing Louis XV in Maïwenn’s 2023 film Jeanne du Barry. The sources describing that preparation do not identify the coach by name. Depp said the work helped him make the words feel natural, leaving him free to focus on acting and his scene partners.
Who was Johnny Depp’s French coach?
The coach’s name is not given in the cited accounts. AlloCiné reports that Depp worked with a coach to approach 18th-century French, while the film’s press-kit interview records him praising the coach’s precision work. Neither identifies the person.

Depp already knew some French, but prepared his pronunciation before filming. The Festival de Cannes noted both his existing knowledge and that advance work; in the press kit, Depp said he worked with a highly effective coach to get closer to the French of the 18th century.
What did the coaching help him do?
Depp described the goal as natural delivery rather than pronunciation for its own sake. AlloCiné quotes him: “Mon but a été que les mots sortent de ma bouche de manière la plus naturelle possible pour que je puisse me concentrer sur le jeu et mes partenaires.” In English: “My aim was for the words to come out of my mouth as naturally as possible so I could focus on the acting and my scene partners.”

The press-kit interview also connects the preparation to his freedom to play the role and improvise. Depp said he researched Louis XV with two biographies and a project expert, looking at everyday anecdotes as well as broader history. These accounts describe his preparation and intentions; they do not establish that the finished accent was historically exact or independently evaluated.

Jeanne du Barry is a 2023 French period drama directed by Maïwenn, who also plays Jeanne. Depp plays Louis XV. The Festival de Cannes describes it as Maïwenn’s first period film, shot on 35mm and mostly at Versailles.

The Cannes synopsis follows Jeanne Vaubernier, a working-class woman seeking social advancement. Her lover, the Comte du Barry, arranges her introduction to Louis XV; she becomes the king’s official favorite, stirring scandal at court. The film’s period setting makes Depp’s pronunciation preparation part of a broader effort to inhabit the role, though the cited material does not offer an independent verdict on how convincingly the accent lands.
Le Monde’s 17 May 2023 review interpreted the film as Maïwenn drawing the historical favorite and the court into her own artistic sensibility. That is one critic’s reading, not a consensus assessment.
