What happens to Stranger Things after season 5?
The Duffers have drawn a distinction between ending the original ensemble’s story and ending the franchise. Matt Duffer said season five would bring the central characters’ story to its conclusion, while also saying that more Stranger Things stories were in the works. What’s on Netflix reported his remarks from the 2025 event; GamesRadar also covered the distinction.
That means the creators’ comments support a future for the wider franchise, not a promise that the original cast or characters will carry on unchanged after the series finale.

At the 2025 event, Matt Duffer said: “There are more Stranger Things stories to tell and in the works.” He also said he and his brother and co-creator, Ross Duffer, were deeply involved. The remarks establish the creators’ stated plans at that time; they do not provide a current project slate.

No project details or release dates were announced
The reported comments did not name any upcoming project, specify whether it would be a television series or another format, or give a release date. The 2025 report therefore should not be read as a 2026 schedule or confirmation of a particular spin-off.
How does The First Shadow fit into the franchise?
Stranger Things: The First Shadow is a stage prequel and an existing example of the franchise telling a story outside the television series. Its existence shows that the world has already been explored in another format; it does not identify the format of the additional stories the Duffers said were in development. GamesRadar’s coverage describes the play as a prequel.

Matt Duffer said the team wants any project carrying the Stranger Things name to be “of the highest quality and not repetitive” and to have “a reason to exist” and “blaze its own path.” That is the creators’ stated creative standard, not a description of any unnamed project’s content or quality.
