Yes—in Stephen King’s 1975 novel, the vampires still control Jerusalem’s Lot when Ben Mears and Mark Petrie leave. They destroy master vampire Kurt Barlow, but the book does not show them eliminating the remaining vampires. A year later, they return to renew the fight, leaving the ending unresolved rather than confirming the town has been saved.
What happens at the end of the novel?
By the time Ben and Mark confront Barlow, the vampire outbreak has devastated the town. They kill him, but defeating the master vampire does not undo what has happened or prove that every vampire is gone. The surviving vampires remain in the Lot, and Ben and Mark leave rather than reclaiming the town.

The epilogue moves forward a year. Ben and Mark return intending to continue the fight. Their return is a renewed attempt, not evidence that they have already cleared Jerusalem’s Lot or permanently ended the danger.
What does the fire mean?
The fire is an attempt to destroy the vampires’ refuge. One academic reading of the ending sees Ben’s return as a break with his effort to recover his childhood home and past: he comes back to destroy the place bound up with both his childhood fear and the later vampire horror. That interpretation helps explain the force of the decision, but the novel does not confirm that the fire kills every vampire.

Does the novel confirm that the evil is gone?
No. The closing pages leave the outcome open: Ben and Mark mean to fight again, but readers are not shown a completed victory. King’s later story “One for the Road” also treats the vampire danger associated with the Lot as continuing beyond the novel’s events. The ending’s emphasis is on persistence and another attempt, not a declaration that the threat has been permanently eradicated.
Is this the ending of the 1979 miniseries or the 2024 film?
No conclusion about those adaptations should be drawn from the novel’s epilogue. Stephen King’s official site lists both a 1979 television adaptation and a 2024 film adaptation, but the sources establishing those versions do not provide enough detail to verify their final scenes here. The 2024 film is a Gary Dauberman adaptation; Warner Bros. Discovery announced its Max debut in 2024. Those release details do not establish that the film shares the book’s ending.
