The headline says Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update mocked Mark Zuckerberg for “cozying up to Trump,” but the available reporting does not establish which segment it refers to or what the joke was. The public events behind that characterization are clearer: Meta donated to Donald Trump’s inaugural fund, Zuckerberg dined with Trump, and Meta announced a change to its U.S. fact-checking program.
What did Weekend Update say about Zuckerberg?
The precise joke cannot be reliably recapped from the available coverage. A search-indexed headline describes Weekend Update as ripping Zuckerberg, but it does not supply a complete article or verify the segment and its wording. The January 25, 2025, Weekend Update coverage that is documented concerns jokes about Trump’s inauguration; it does not confirm that this is the segment named in the headline.
That distinction matters: without the original clip or a complete transcript, attributing a particular punchline to the show would be guesswork. The headline’s phrase “cozying up” is its characterization, not a verified quotation from the segment.
What events prompted the “cozying up” framing?
Meta donated to Trump’s inaugural fund
The Associated Press reported that Meta gave $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund. The report also said Zuckerberg dined with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in November 2024 and was set to cohost an inauguration reception. These are reported public events; they do not, by themselves, establish Zuckerberg’s private motives. Associated Press, January 14, 2025.

Meta announced a U.S. fact-checking policy change
On January 7, 2025, Meta announced that it would end its third-party fact-checking program in the United States and move to a Community Notes model. That is the company’s description of its policy change; the announcement alone does not prove why it made the decision. Meta Newsroom, “More Speech and Fewer Mistakes”.
CNN’s January 11 coverage also discussed the fact-checking change and the inaugural donation as developments positioning Meta for the incoming administration. That is the outlet’s analysis of the events, not a confirmed statement of Zuckerberg’s intent. CNN Newsroom transcript, January 11, 2025.
