Vinland Saga ended with chapter 220 on July 24, 2025. After roughly 20 years of serialization, creator Makoto Yukimura reportedly described feeling as though “a great weight has been lifted from my shoulders”—relief at completing a long commitment, not regret about the manga or its readers.
What Makoto Yukimura said after Vinland Saga ended
ComicBook.com reported Yukimura’s post-ending reaction as “a great weight has been lifted from my shoulders.” The phrase captures the strain of carrying a major creative project through to completion; it should not be read as a dismissal of the story. The same coverage says Yukimura thanked readers and brought Thorfinn’s journey to a close.

In a translated statement reproduced by ComicBook.com, Yukimura also reflected on the ending: “I aim for all readers to close the book thinking, ‘I’m glad I read it,’ but I guess there’s no ending that satisfies everyone.” It acknowledges the difficulty of writing a finale that meets every reader’s expectations while expressing the hope that readers will value the experience.

How long was the original plan?
Yukimura’s reported initial plan was to tell the story in 20 volumes over 10 years. Instead, the manga ran to a reported 29 collected volumes and 220 chapters, taking about twice as long as that original schedule. ComicBook.com’s account of Yukimura’s relief after the ending provides the original-plan and final-volume figures.
That gap helps explain why finishing could feel like a weight lifted: the project had been part of Yukimura’s working life for two decades. The duration is a publication-history measure, not evidence that he wanted the story—or his readers—to be gone.
