Matthew Lillard said in a March 2024 interview that he was associated with a new Scooby-Doo project designed to let children put themselves into an adventure. He did not identify the project, confirm that he would voice or play Shaggy in it, or give a release date. Its format is also unknown.
What did Matthew Lillard say about the new Scooby-Doo project?
In an interview published by Toonado on March 2, 2024, Lillard said: “I can’t really talk about it yet, but there’s a new project I’m associated with that will allow kids to put themselves into a Scooby-Doo adventure.”
That is the extent of the project detail in the interview: Lillard described his association with it and its child-focused premise, but did not name it or explain what form it would take. The report does not establish a release date.
Is Matthew Lillard returning as Shaggy?
Lillard’s comment does not confirm that he will play or voice Shaggy in this project. He spoke separately about his long association with the character, saying: “I’m honoured to do that for as long as they’ll have me.” He also said he understood that he would eventually pass the role to a next generation, as Casey Kasem had done.

Those remarks describe Lillard’s relationship to Shaggy over time; they do not specify his character or performance in the unnamed project. The sources identify Lillard with the live-action films Scooby-Doo (2002) and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004), as well as later animated Shaggy work. Will Forte voiced Shaggy in Scoob!, according to contemporaneous coverage from ComicBook.com. These examples give context to Lillard’s history with the franchise, but do not identify the role he may have in the new project.
Will the project be a new Scooby-Doo movie?
That has not been established. Lillard did not say whether the project is a movie, series, game, interactive experience, or another format. Capital FM’s March 4, 2024 report likewise noted that he had not revealed whether it would be live action.

His description of children putting themselves into an adventure may sound interactive, but it is not enough to identify the format. Calling the project a film—or announcing that it is a live-action Shaggy return—would go beyond what the interview confirms.

The specific statement is from March 2024. Warner Bros. Discovery’s corrected Scoobtober 2026 announcement describes seasonal programming and licensed Scooby-Doo products, but does not connect those offerings to Lillard’s unnamed project. Franchise activity alone is not confirmation that his project has been announced or released.
