Sterling K. Brown gives Paradise its emotional anchor: his Secret Service agent, Xavier Collins, makes the series’ elaborate turns feel personal even when the political thriller’s plotting gets shaky. Hulu’s mystery is most rewarding for viewers who enjoy a puzzle-box story and can live with conspicuous twists; it is less convincing as tightly grounded political realism.
What is Paradise about?
Created by Dan Fogelman, this Hulu Original begins with Xavier Collins, played by Brown, assigned to protect former President Cal Bradford (James Marsden). An early murder unsettles that security detail and opens into a larger mystery. The story soon reaches beyond the initial political-protection setup, with revelations that alter how the world and the community at the center of the series are understood. The turns are part of the appeal, so that is as far as a spoiler-light review should go.

That widening scope gives the show room to raise questions about power, privilege and who is protected when disaster strikes. In a January 2025 Associated Press interview, Brown described the series as looking at “who wields the real power and asks should it be that way.” The AP also quoted him on the “coalescing of capitalism and politics.” Those ideas lend the thriller a larger frame, though the pace of revelations sometimes pulls attention away from their implications.
Does Sterling K. Brown carry the series?
Brown is the clearest reason to stay with Paradise. He plays Xavier as a person under pressure rather than merely a mechanism for delivering clues: his emotional presence gives the mystery stakes even as the story keeps changing shape. Marsden’s former president helps establish the political dimension, while the broader cast contributes to the show’s shifting web of loyalties and secrets.

The central tension is not whether Brown can hold the screen, but whether the plotting around him earns the trust his performance invites. TIME’s review praised the first episode’s major swerve while criticizing the show’s attention to detail. That assessment captures the divide: the reveals can be exciting, but the connective logic does not always feel as sturdy as the emotional core.
How well does the political thriller work?
Paradise is less a procedural about protecting a former president than a serialized mystery that uses political danger as its entry point. Its escalation is designed to provoke questions and keep viewers revising their assumptions. For fans of layered, reveal-driven dramas, that momentum can be a strength.
Rank #2
The cost is a willingness to accept turns that can feel conspicuous and a plot dense enough for details to wobble. This is a critical judgment, not a consensus measurement: TIME offers one independent review perspective, and the series’ tolerance for contrivance will be a matter of taste. Viewers looking for economical plotting or realistic political mechanics may find the construction less satisfying than Brown’s performance and the premise.
Who is Paradise for?
- Try it if: you like serialized mysteries, major reversals and a strong lead performance, and do not mind some narrative contrivance.
- Temper expectations if: you want a tightly realistic political-security drama whose details remain as persuasive as its central mystery.
Is Paradise based on a book?
No. Hulu describes Paradise as an original story developed by Fogelman, not an adaptation. There is no source novel to read before watching.
