What was the “jalapeño business” joke?
During the Saturday Night Live season 40 finale in May 2015, Jost delivered a joke about an Ohio woman arrested after allegedly stabbing her boyfriend for eating all their salsa. His punchline was that the boyfriend had been “jalapeño business,” a play on “all up in your business.” Entertainment Weekly’s report, syndicated by AOL, says the joke had been cut from an earlier episode and returned in the finale as part of a series of callbacks.
Why was Michael Che angry about it?
In a 2024 conversation on the Fly on the Wall podcast with Dana Carvey and David Spade, Che recalled objecting to the joke before it aired. He said he warned Jost during the run-through, “If you tell that joke on air, I’m leaving. I’m quitting the show.” Jost told him anyway.
Che’s frustration grew when the audience responded well. Jost teased that Che was upset because the joke worked; Che’s objection, as he recalled it, was that he had disliked the line and then had to watch it land. The report does not give a measured audience response, only the speakers’ account of the reaction. The Hollywood Reporter’s report, syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment, quotes the exchange.
When did Che name the joke?
Che named it in that 2024 podcast conversation, nearly a decade after the joke first aired in the May 2015 season finale. He summed up his reaction: “Yeah, I think jalapeño business, I was pretty furious about that one.” The account comes from news coverage of the conversation rather than an official podcast transcript.
