It was a three-episode arc—not a return to regular acting or a full Suits reunion.
Why did Gabriel Macht agree to return?
Macht had considered Harvey’s story finished when Suits ended. The original series had run for nine seasons and 134 episodes, according to the Los Angeles Times. He said he wanted to travel, spend time with his children, and pursue other interests; he also felt the show had told its story and “stuck the landing.”

What changed was not a broad desire to resume acting, but a particular opportunity. Macht told the TV Insider that he had initially been reluctant, then reconsidered if the project and circumstances aligned: “I thought, you know what? Why not? If it does work out and if it all does align, why not do it for the fans?”
What was the story reason for Harvey’s return?
Korsh gave Macht a specific connection between Harvey and Ted Black, the Los Angeles lawyer played by Stephen Amell. The two had known one another during their years as New York prosecutors. In an interview with the Television Academy, Korsh explained: “So Harvey and Ted did have interactions in the past, and we explore that a little bit more in another series of flashback scenes.”

The flashbacks establish that history, while the present-day story brings Harvey into Ted’s effort to deal with John Pellegrini. The Los Angeles Times describes the arc as using the past connection to set up Harvey’s involvement in the current conflict. That gave Macht a reason to reprise the character within the spin-off’s story rather than simply appear for nostalgia.
How did fans and practicalities factor in?
The renewed attention around Suits introduced the show to new viewers and reminded Macht how attached longtime fans remained to Harvey. He saw the appearance as a way to support the spin-off and hand the franchise to Amell and its newer cast. As he put it to the Los Angeles Times, “if they can make it happen, I want to do it for the fans.”
That enthusiasm was not the only condition. Macht said the timing, his family, and other commitments had to work. An interview-based report from Hindustan Times says Korsh could arrange filming around those commitments. The finite arc made the appearance feasible without implying a full-time career change.

Macht appeared in a three-episode arc. The return let the spin-off connect its new lead to a familiar character while keeping Harvey’s role limited.

Suits LA launched in February 2025. NBC canceled it after one season, Variety reported on May 10, 2025, in its cancellation report. Macht’s appearance was therefore a bounded contribution to a new series, not evidence that he planned to reprise Harvey regularly.
