He did not blame a specific company, identify a production cause, or call the anime bad.
What TurtleMe said in his April 15 statement
TurtleMe posted “In regards to everything” on r/tbatenovel as the anime entered its third week and Sakura-Con approached. He opened by thanking fans for their support and explaining that he wanted to address misunderstandings circulating about the adaptation.
He described the anime as a collaboration involving people across Tapas, Studio A-Cat, and Crunchyroll, with each bringing a vision for the series. He acknowledged that creative differences can arise, but said he believed everyone involved was acting with their best effort and intentions.
“At the end of the day, there will always be creative differences in the room, but I really do believe that everyone is coming at it with their best effort and intentions.”

That is an expression of his view of the people involved, not a detailed account of which creative decisions were disputed or how they were resolved.
How he described his role in the anime process
TurtleMe contrasted the relative control he has when writing the novel or overseeing the comic with the many moving parts involved in an anime option. He said:
“I learned in the anime industry, it’s very rare for the creator to have a say in deciding the ins and outs when it comes to the inception of an anime.”
This is TurtleMe’s personal account of his experience. The statement does not specify which decisions he could or could not influence, and it should not be treated as a universal description of anime contracts or production arrangements.

Why the anime was drawing criticism
Contemporary coverage linked the backlash to viewers’ perceptions of the adaptation’s animation quality. The Outerhaven reported that some fans called for the anime to be canceled and remade. GamesRadar focused on attention around an action sequence in episode two. These reports describe visible reactions; they do not establish how representative those views were among the entire audience.
TurtleMe did not respond by declaring the adaptation a failure or assigning responsibility to a particular company. His post instead addressed the surrounding reaction and his perspective on the people and process behind the series.
Did TurtleMe ask fans to keep watching?
He asked fans to support the story and the people behind it, but also made clear that he was not asking anyone to pretend to like the anime.
“I’m not asking you to like something you don’t, but please be respectful and set an example in the vast ocean that is the internet.”

His request was about respectful conduct and support, not a demand that viewers continue watching or change their opinion of the adaptation.

TurtleMe said he had spent “10 years writing almost 2 million words” on the story. That is his own figure from the statement, rather than an independently audited count. For readers interested in the comic source, The Outerhaven reported in April 2025 that Yen Press was compiling the webcomic in physical format; the report does not establish current stock or the availability of a particular edition.
What the statement does—and does not—settle
The post offers TurtleMe’s perspective on the adaptation process and the criticism around it. It does not identify the cause of choices viewers disliked, assign blame, or provide a production-by-production account of his influence. GamesRadar reported at the time that the first season was slated for 24 episodes, but that was a contemporaneous plan, not confirmation of the anime’s current status.
