She said she received no backend participation, but the reports on the exchange do not establish her salary or full contract terms.
What did Blanchett say?
Blanchett made the remark during an August 2024 appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, where she was promoting Borderlands with Gina Gershon. In the show’s “Plead the Fifth” segment, Cohen asked which film had given her the biggest paycheck and guessed The Lord of the Rings.
“Are you kidding me? No,” Blanchett replied. “No one got paid anything to do that movie. … I mean, I basically got free sandwiches, and I got to keep my [elf] ears.” She also said, “Women don’t get paid as much as you think they do.” That is her broad personal observation, not a statistic about pay on this particular production.
Did she get paid for The Lord of the Rings?
The Los Angeles Times contextualized Blanchett’s punchline by noting that the cast did receive compensation, though reportedly not at the blockbuster level viewers might assume. Her remark should not be read as a literal accounting of every cast member’s pay—or as confirmation that her own fee was zero.
Blanchett’s exact salary has not been established in the contemporaneous reports of the exchange. When Cohen asked about backend participation—additional compensation tied to a film’s financial performance—she answered, “No! That was way before any of that. No, nothing.” That answer addresses backend participation; it does not disclose her upfront fee or the complete terms of her contract.
Why the box-office total does not answer the pay question
The Los Angeles Times reported that Jackson’s trilogy grossed $2.9 billion worldwide, with the first film grossing $898.2 million. Those are box-office gross figures, not measures of profit or amounts available to divide among cast members. They do not reveal production costs, distribution terms, contract provisions, or Blanchett’s individual compensation.

Blanchett said she wanted to work with Peter Jackson, whose 1992 film Braindead had made an impression on her. She played Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and later returned to the role in the Hobbit films. Her explanation points to the director and the opportunity as her stated motivation; it does not provide a figure for what she was paid.
