Episode details
“Grenade” is the third episode of Pluribus Season 1. Written and directed by Gordon Smith, it was released November 14, 2025, and runs 43 minutes, according to Apple TV and Rotten Tomatoes. Apple’s official synopsis describes a world eager to help Carol, to her irritation, and a heart-to-heart that ends with a bang.
What happens in “Grenade”?
A memory Carol does not want back
A flashback takes Carol and Helen to an ice hotel in Norway. Their contrasting responses to the trip—Carol focused on discomfort and her writing career, Helen more open to the experience—give emotional context to Carol’s present-day grief and anger. After returning to Albuquerque with Zosia, Carol tries to contact Manousos, another person unaffected by the Joining, but the call becomes hostile. Zosia gives her a gift Helen ordered before the Joining. Carol responds by asking the Others to forget Helen.
An empty grocery store, then a sudden restock
Carol sees a familiar breakfast as a possible sign that the Others have not honored her request. At a Sprouts store, she finds shelves empty. Zosia explains that the collective has shifted resources to manage shortages. Carol demands that the store be restored, and the Others quickly restock it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The episode makes resource management tangible: changes that may make sense to the collective still disrupt Carol’s daily life, and the Others can reverse them as soon as she objects. Their ability to respond does not resolve whether they understand the effect their decisions have on her.
Carol asks for a grenade—and gets one
A power shutdown intended to conserve energy adds to Carol’s frustration. During a call with Zosia, Carol says she would be better off with a grenade. Zosia later arrives with one. As the two talk, Zosia brings up Helen and the Norway trip. Carol becomes angry, primes the grenade, and discovers it is real.

Zosia throws it outside and tackles Carol to shield her. The blast injures Zosia, and the Others send an ambulance. Carol’s furious remark has become an actual weapon in her hands; the episode does not present the result as a harmless misunderstanding.
The question at the hospital
At the hospital, Carol asks a representative of the collective why they gave her the grenade and whether they would give her anything—even a nuclear weapon. The representative says that, after deliberation, they would. Carol then asks the Others to leave her alone while she processes the answer.

What the grenade reveals—and what it does not
The episode’s central tension is between care and obedience. The Others act as if they want to help, but their willingness to fulfill a dangerous request makes that help frightening. Carol’s tests establish that they can provide what she asks for and that their compliance has consequences. They do not establish what the Others intend, whether they understand danger as a human would, or what ultimately explains the Joining.
Consent is another unresolved issue. Carol asks the collective to forget Helen, objects to its management of resources, and eventually asks for space. The Others’ responsiveness does not answer whether they respect her autonomy; in the grenade scene, literal compliance is clearly not the same as safe or thoughtful care.

Helen’s memory makes the conflict personal. Carol’s anger is not only about material disruption: Zosia’s mention of the Norway trip brings an intimate, unwanted memory into a conversation already charged by Carol’s demand to forget Helen. That collision helps explain why a seemingly simple act of assistance becomes a crisis.
