Paddington in Peru keeps its hero’s kindness intact, but trades much of the earlier films’ London-set comic charm for a broader jungle adventure. It is a pleasant return for the bear and his family, though not a full match for the series at its most inventive.
What happens in Paddington in Peru?
When Aunt Lucy disappears from the Home for Retired Bears, Paddington and the Brown family travel to Peru to find her. A map clue leads them into the Amazon rainforest, where the search becomes a family adventure involving the possibility of legendary treasure. Sony’s official film page describes the story as Paddington’s return to the country where he was born.
Does the film preserve Paddington’s charm?
Yes: the character’s earnestness, courtesy and capacity to meet trouble with decency remain central to the film’s appeal. In his Associated Press review, Jake Coyle describes the movie as bright and buoyant, and finds Paddington’s good manners and sincerity charming. That warmth gives the story a steady emotional center even as the adventure grows larger.
The change is in the film’s scale and comic texture. The first two films drew much of their character from Paddington’s life in London; this one takes him and the Browns into a more conventional rainforest adventure. Coyle argues that director Dougal Wilson does not quite capture the comic spirit Paul King brought to the earlier films, and that the Amazon treasure hunt is less naturally suited to Paddington than London. That is one critic’s judgment, rather than a measure of consensus, but it identifies the sequel’s main trade-off: more travel and spectacle, less of the tightly observed domestic comedy that made the earlier outings distinctive.

Is Paddington in Peru as good as Paddington 2?
Not quite, if what you most value is the previous films’ visual invention and comic timing. The AP review’s comparison suggests that Wilson’s film has not reproduced King’s particular comic sensibility, and its rainforest plot can feel less organically connected to Paddington’s appeal than the London setting did.
But it still has the qualities that make Paddington an appealing family-film hero: warmth, optimism and an emotional bond with the Browns. The question is less whether the film abandons the series’ heart than whether its bigger adventure gives that heart as much room to shine. For younger viewers drawn to colorful action and a clear family quest, the change of scenery may be a plus; adult fans who most enjoyed the earlier films’ mischievous visual comedy may find this one less memorable.
