Spoilers for Season 4, Episode 9, “Escape from Planet Klongo.” The episode identifies screenwriter Marshall Pope as Sazz Pataki’s former stunt protégé, Rex Bailey, and ends with Mabel confronting him over a screenplay bearing Sazz’s name. It stops short of explaining the murder; the full reveal comes in the Season 4 finale.
Glen looks like the lead—but he can’t answer Mabel’s questions
After the Westies and Dudenoff storyline, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel return to Sazz’s murder. Helga’s information sends them looking for Sazz’s former protégé. Glen Stubbins seems like a promising lead, but he is unconscious in the hospital and dies before Mabel can question him. His death closes off one line of inquiry rather than solving the case.
Who is Sazz’s protégé? Ron Howard points to Rex Bailey
A clue connected to Sazz’s earlier film, Project Ronkonkoma, leads the trio to director Ron Howard, who is working on the in-universe science-fiction movie Escape from Planet Klongo. Howard’s account and a photograph identify Sazz’s stunt protégé as Rex Bailey. Charles and Oliver recognize the man in the picture: Marshall Pope, the screenwriter working on the movie adaptation of Only Murders.
That is Episode 9’s central reveal: Rex Bailey and Marshall Pope are the same person. Marshall is no longer just an unfamiliar screenwriter on the edges of the investigation; his history with Sazz puts him squarely in the trio’s sights.

Why does Sazz’s name appear on the screenplay?
Separately, Mabel finds Sazz’s original screenplay for the Only Murders movie tucked into beer packaging Sazz left behind. The script credits Sazz. That discovery raises the possibility that Marshall took credit for her work, giving Mabel a potential reason for the conflict between them—but the episode does not establish the full motive.
Does Episode 9 reveal who killed Sazz?
It strongly points to Marshall, but it does not complete the murder solution. The episode brings together three pieces of the case: Marshall is identified as Rex, he is connected to Sazz’s work, and Mabel ends the episode confronting him. It does not yet lay out the method or fully explain how the killing happened.

When Marshall arrives at Mabel’s apartment to discuss script revisions, Charles and Oliver send Mabel their identification of him as Rex. Marshall sees the message. Mabel then asks why Sazz’s name is on the screenplay, and the scene ends with the danger unresolved. The episode’s cliffhanger turns suspicion into an immediate confrontation, not a completed confession or explanation.

Finale context: In an October 29, 2024 interview with TheWrap, co-creator and showrunner John Hoffman confirmed that Marshall Pope/Rex Bailey is Sazz’s killer and discussed how the finale explains the route across the Arconia ledge. That is the answer supplied by Episode 10, not an explanation Episode 9 itself gives. In an earlier episode interview, the unresolved question included how the killer could have carried out the murder in 12 minutes.

Hoffman also described the season’s planning in that finale interview: “Day one. This wasn’t the case in Season 1. We had various possibilities for the killer in Season 1 when we started the writers’ room. But ever since then, we have to work backwards or just figure out the end and everything that really happens around the incident that caused the murder, so we can’t really go anywhere with writing until we have that and then twist our way to it.” He was describing the writers’ process, not quoting episode dialogue.
